Chapter Eight: The Forgotten Promise

495 Words
Adrian remained seated in silence, staring at the old memory that had suddenly returned to him. A little girl. A kitchen. A pair of frightened eyes. And a promise he had made without understanding how important it would become. He reached for his phone and called his father. "Dad." Edward answered almost immediately. "Yes?" "I have a question." "What is it?" "Did you ever know a girl named Yvonne Carter when I was young?" There was a brief silence. Edward's voice changed. "Why are you asking?" "Because I remember meeting her." Another pause. "Yes," Edward finally said. "You met her years ago." Adrian sat up. "You remember?" "Of course." "Why didn't you tell me?" "You never asked." Adrian ran a hand through his hair. "What happened to her?" "She stayed with the Carters." Adrian looked toward the window. "And now she's the woman I'm supposed to marry." Edward said nothing. Adrian let out a quiet laugh. "That's unbelievable." "Life has a strange way of bringing people back together." Adrian smiled. He remembered the promise he'd made as a child. He had told her he would return. He had told her he would marry her. And somehow, twenty years later, he had. But Yvonne didn't remember. Not yet. The following morning, Yvonne woke early. She had barely finished getting dressed when there was a knock on her door. "Come in." Richard entered. "Adrian is coming by later." Yvonne nodded. "Okay." Richard looked at her carefully. "You seem different." "How?" "Less resistant." Yvonne smiled faintly. "Maybe I'm just trying to understand everything." Richard nodded. "That is all I ask." After he left, Yvonne sat at her desk. She opened an old box containing some of her childhood belongings. She wasn't sure why. Perhaps she was looking for something she couldn't name. She found an old ribbon, a broken bracelet, and several photographs. Then she saw it. A tiny drawing. Two children standing beside each other. Underneath it, written in childish handwriting, were the words: Yvonne and Adrian. She stared at it. Her heart began to race. She remembered. Not everything. Just pieces. A little boy. A smile. A promise. I'll come back. She whispered his name. "Adrian…" At that exact moment, her phone rang. She looked at the screen. It was Adrian. She answered. "Hello?" "Good morning." His voice made her smile. "Good morning." "I was wondering if you'd like to go somewhere with me today." Yvonne hesitated. "Where?" "Somewhere quiet." She smiled. "Alright." "Good. I'll pick you up." After the call ended, Yvonne looked down at the drawing again. For the first time, she wondered if the man she was about to marry wasn't a stranger after all. Maybe he'd been part of her story long before either of them realized it. Across the city, Adrian prepared to leave. He looked at himself in the mirror and smiled. He had spent years forgetting a promise made by a five-year-old boy. Now he intended to keep it.
