Adrian arrived at the Carter mansion shortly after noon.
Yvonne was already waiting outside.
When she saw him step out of the car, that strange feeling returned.
Familiar.
Warm.
Almost like she had known him long before yesterday.
Adrian walked toward her.
"You look beautiful."
Yvonne smiled.
"Thank you."
He opened the car door for her.
"Shall we?"
She nodded and got in.
As they drove away, neither spoke for a few minutes.
Yvonne finally glanced at him.
"Can I ask you something?"
"Anything."
"Did you ever come to the Carter house when you were younger?"
Adrian's hands tightened slightly on the steering wheel.
"Yes."
Yvonne looked at him.
"Do you remember?"
"I remember some things."
She hesitated.
"I think I remember you too."
Adrian looked at her briefly.
"You do?"
"Not clearly."
She smiled nervously.
"I remember a boy named Adrian."
He smiled.
"What did he look like?"
"I'm not sure."
"What did he say to you?"
Yvonne looked out the window.
"He promised he would come back."
Adrian's smile faded into something softer.
"Did he keep his promise?"
She looked at him.
"I don't know."
He turned his attention back to the road.
"Maybe he did."
Yvonne studied his face.
There was something in his voice that made her heart beat faster.
"Why do you say that?"
Adrian smiled.
"Maybe you should remember on your own."
She frowned.
"You're being mysterious."
"Perhaps."
For the rest of the drive, Yvonne kept thinking about his words.
Eventually, Adrian stopped outside a quiet restaurant overlooking the city.
Yvonne looked around.
"This is beautiful."
"I thought you'd like it."
They sat across from each other.
For once, there were no parents, no business agreements, and no marriage discussions.
Just the two of them.
Adrian wanted to know everything about her.
"What did you study?"
"Business Administration."
His eyebrows lifted.
"Really?"
"Yes."
"And what do you want to do with it?"
Yvonne smiled.
"Build something of my own."
"What?"
"A company."
Adrian leaned back.
"You've thought about this for a long time."
"Since university."
"Then why haven't you started?"
Her smile disappeared slightly.
"Life happened."
He understood that there was more to the answer, but he didn't push.
"You should."
Yvonne looked at him.
"Should what?"
"Build your company."
She laughed softly.
"You make it sound easy."
"It isn't."
"Then why are you telling me to do it?"
"Because you look like someone who doesn't give up easily."
Yvonne smiled.
"No one has ever said that about me."
"Then they haven't been paying attention."
Her heart skipped.
She quickly looked down at the menu.
Adrian smiled to himself.
For the first time, he wasn't thinking about the marriage agreement.
He was simply enjoying being with her.
Back at the Carter mansion, Charlotte stood by the window watching the road.
She saw Adrian's car disappear into the distance.
Her expression darkened.
Her mother entered the room.
"You're still thinking about him?"
Charlotte turned.
"I never stopped."
"You refused the arrangement."
"Because I thought it was Edward."
Her mother sighed.
"And now?"
Charlotte looked out the window again.
"Now I know I made a mistake."
"You cannot undo it."
Charlotte's eyes hardened.
"I don't need to."
Her mother frowned.
"What are you planning?"
Charlotte smiled faintly.
"I'll make Adrian realize that Yvonne isn't the woman he should marry."
Her mother stared at her.
"Charlotte, don't do something you'll regret."
Charlotte picked up her phone.
"I'm not going to regret anything."
Meanwhile, Yvonne and Adrian continued talking, unaware of what was waiting for them at home.
For the first time in her life, Yvonne felt as though someone was genuinely interested in the person she wanted to become.
And Adrian was beginning to realize something even more dangerous.
He wasn't simply willing to marry Yvonne.
He was starting to want her.
