Chapter 10: Heated Argument-1

734 Words
Rebel “Are you sure he never gave you anything to keep, or let something slip about Cosa Nova?” “I am sure. I'm sorry I'm not more helpful,” she says, looking down. “It’s okay, Trish. He obviously knew what he was doing when he kept you in the dark. What about the man that helped you escape? We tried calling, but the phone has been disconnected. Did he ever say or give you anything to keep safe?” I know it’s a long shot, but he did help her. So maybe he wanted to escape Gary too. “Now that you mention it, Carl did give me a gift when I left,” “Can you show me this gift?” I asked and she nodded and got up. I followed her to her room and I noticed that she unpacked her clothes. I am glad she is making herself at home. She takes a beautifully carved wooden jewelry box out of the nightstand and hands it to me. “It's cute and just my style. I love vintage things, and he knew that. He said that when he saw it, he immediately thought of me. It’s a bit heavy, but I have had it with me ever since,” she says, smiling. “Were you seeing him too?” I asked before I could stop myself. The hurt on her face immediately made me regret it. “No, that man was old enough to be my dad. He was the closest thing I had to a friend. I am not like that, Rebel,” she says softly. “I am sorry Trish, I didn't mean it to come out like that,” I say, and before I can stop myself, I pull her into my arms and hold her. She rests her forehead on my chest, before she looks up at me. And there it is again. I am immediately caught in her spell. She looks away first, and moves out of my embrace and clears her throat. “Is there anything else you wanted to discuss with me?” “I am truly sorry, Trish. I didn’t mean to imply anything.” I answered, but she just gave me a tight smile. “Was there anything in here?” I asked, trying to get away from the awkwardness. “There was a necklace in it, but it broke when I was escaping Gary the second time. Now I just keep it for my other jewelry.” She takes the jewelry out and hands me the box. She is right, it is heavier than expected, even when it’s empty. I examine the box and nothing looks out of the ordinary outside. When I shake it, it sounds like there is something inside. Which is odd, because I saw her empty it. I open it and see that the space between the little mirror and the top is big enough to fit something in. “Can I try to open it? I promise to have it fixed again, if I damage it” I say and she nods. I take out my pocket knife and pry the mirror away from the wood. I was right, in the space between the panels was a flash drive and a note. I hand it to her and she opens the note. ‘I am sorry I couldn't get you away sooner, child. If he comes after you again, take this to the police. Be safe,’ She wipes her tears and looks at the flash drive. “I am not sure about going to the police. Here,” she says, handing it to me. “I will go check on Zia,” she adds and gets up without another word, and leaves her room. You are an asshole Rebel. She is really hurt by your stupid comment. It seemed like this man only wanted her safety, and he really cared about her. I will make it up to her when she has calmed down a bit. But right now, I need to see what is on this flash drive. I put the panels back in place and put the jewelry box on her nightstand, before I went to my office. I plugged it in and there are quite a few files on there. One of them is actually labeled, ‘Cosa Nova Cartel’.
