"Get out."
The command wasn’t shouted. It was a low, lethal purr that vibrated through the wooden floorboards, carrying the absolute weight of Alpha authority.
"You heard him, Bess, move!" Martha hissed, scrambling backward like a crab across the damp flagstones. The head laundress scurried out of the doorway, dragging a terrified Bess by the sleeve, muttering frantic apologies and pulling the heavy wooden doors half-shut behind them.
They left us trapped in a suffocating bubble of damp air, boiling lye, and electric tension.
I didn't move. My spine remained glued to the damp log wall, my fists clenched so tight my fingernails drew crescent moons of blood into my palms.
Ronan hadn't stepped back. He loomed over me, his broad shoulders blocking out the rest of the world, shutting down the light. The air between us burned with the chaotic friction of a mating bond violently rejecting its own timing my soul screaming of execution and betrayal, his mind reeling from a puzzle he couldn't solve.
"Who are you?" Ronan demanded, his voice dropping to a rough, broken whisper. He reached out, his long fingers hovering mere centimeters from my cheek, trembling as if trying to test an invisible barrier of glass. "You shouldn't be here. Willow Creek is a border slum. You're... you're an omega. But when I crossed the ridge today, my wolf didn't just wake up he went feral. He told me you belong to me."
A bitter, humorless laugh slipped past my lips before I could stop it.
"Belong to you?" I spat, the accumulated agony of my past life breaking through my self-control like a cracked dam. I batted his hovering hand away, the skin-to-skin contact sending a searing jolt of white-hot lightning up my arm. "I don't belong to anyone, Alpha. Least of all a butcher who hands down death sentences before he even knows who he's killing!"
If I had spoken to any other Alpha that way, my head would already be rolling in the dirt. Insolence from an omega was a punishable offense, a crime cleared away with a swift stroke of a blade.
Instead, Ronan flinched.
It was a microscopic flinch, a tightening of his jaw, a sharp intake of breath but I saw it. The fierce, untouchable predator stuttered.
"Death sentences?" Ronan repeated, his silver-gray eyes narrowing as he searched my face, looking for context that wasn't supposed to exist yet. "What are you talking about? I've never laid eyes on you in my life. This is my first time visiting the Willow Creek barracks in three years."
Not yet, a voice hissed in my mind. In three years, he'll visit. In five years, he'll hang me.
"Then keep walking," I whispered fiercely, pressing my chin up, refusing to let him see how badly my knees were shaking. "Pretend you never smelled me. Pretend I'm just another piece of dirty laundry. Because if you think I'm going to fall into your arms, become your Luna, and play the loyal, obedient mate just because some cosmic joke tied our souls together... you are gravely mistaken."
"You think a cosmic joke explains why my chest feels like it's caving in?" Ronan stepped closer, his voice dropping an octave, heavy with a dangerous, dark resonance. "Look at me, Selena. Tell me my name."
My breath hitched. "I know your title, Alpha."
"No," he growled, his eyes flashing in the dim light. "You said my name back there when you looked at the gallows in your head. How do you know it?"
"I don't have time for riddles," I snapped, refusing to answer.
I shoved past him, ducking under his arm before he could grab me, and bolted toward the back exit of the shed.
"Wait!" Ronan spun around, his heavy boots crunching on the gravel outside as I burst into the pale autumn sunlight.
The courtyard was still frozen. Dozens of elite guards, border patrols, and pack members were staring in absolute shock at the future Alpha emerging from an omega's laundry shed, chasing after a low-ranking girl who looked ready to commit murder.
Martha dropped a basket of linens, her jaw hitting the dirt. Kael rested his hand on his hilt, completely bewildered by the sudden shift in events.
Ronan didn't care about the stares. His gaze locked onto my retreating back, and the look in his eyes wasn't anger it was absolute, unadulterated obsession. The bond had sunk its claws into him, and my open defiance had only made the tether tighter, crueler, and entirely inescapable.
As I fled toward the safety of the lower omega quarters, a cold sweat broke out across my back.
I thought running away from him in five years would save me. But I hadn't accounted for this terrifying new truth: By waking up early, I had caught his attention before he even knew who I was. And an Alpha like Ronan doesn't let go of what his wolf claims even if he doesn't understand why his soul feels like it's burning from the inside out.
