Chapter 6 You're Right

862 Words
Jade was trapped in a dream. In it, her grandmother and Lex kept walking farther and farther away, never once looking back. Jade ran after them desperately. But no matter how fast she ran, she couldn't catch up. "Don't leave me!" she cried. Still, the two figures disappeared from her sight. Jade jolted awake, tears streaming down her face. The moment she opened her eyes, Felix was standing over her, his expression dark and strange. "You were calling someone just now. You kept saying Lex. Who is Lex?" "Mr. Garza, you must have misheard. I was just in pain." Jade quietly broke free from Felix's forceful grip. Felix studied her with a frown. For a fleeting moment, her voice reminded him of someone from long ago, a young nurse who had taken care of him for three months fifteen years earlier. This wasn't the first time he'd had that thought. In fact, every time Jade spoke softly, something about her voice reminded him of that girl. Felix never knew the nurse's name. He didn't even know what she looked like. But he had never forgotten the feeling of her roughened fingertips gently pressing against his eyelids as she massaged the aching muscles around his eyes. He had searched for her for years. But the world was too big, and the clues were too few. Fifteen years had passed. He still hadn't found her. Felix pinched the bridge of his nose in irritation. He must have lost his mind. How could he possibly think that the woman who had used every dirty trick imaginable just to marry him could be that innocent girl from back then? "Naomi wants a destination wedding on a tropical island. And she wants you as the bridesmaid. I'm giving you ten days. Prepare everything." Felix composed himself and gave Jade the cold order. He knew perfectly well how humiliating that request would be for any wife. But Jade wasn't his wife. She was nothing more than his pet. "I see. I won't disappoint you or Ms. Kelley." Jade accepted calmly. Felix instantly tightened. Something about her reaction felt wrong. Every time he had made unreasonable demands before, Jade would look at him with eyes full of hurt, trying to hide it, yet unable to mask the humiliation. But this time? Her eyes were empty, devoid of any emotion. "Don't try anything stupid." Felix warned sharply, grabbing her chin. But the moment his fingers touched her skin, he froze. Her skin was cold. Looking closer, he realized that Jade, already thin to begin with, had grown noticeably gaunt. Dark shadows bruised the skin beneath her eyes. Something twisted inside Felix's chest. He opened his mouth, as if he wanted to say something. But before he could, his phone rang. It was Naomi. Felix answered immediately and strode out of the room without another glance. The wedding Felix planned for Naomi was a hundred times more extravagant than the one he had once held with Jade five years earlier. He had even bought Naomi a private tropical island for the ceremony. Naturally, the news exploded across social media within hours. At first, people simply joked about how the rich loved to show off. But soon, countless marketing accounts joined the discussion. And the target of their mockery quickly became Jade. People began ruthlessly mocking, ridiculing, and even insulting her. One user snapped: That b***h is already all over your man, and you still won't divorce him? You're letting her walk all over you like a doormat. At this point, you might as well be dead! Another one fired back: Come on, everyone knows Jade schemed her way into becoming his wife. Remember the heiress from the Wallace family who disappeared? Of course, she won't divorce him. She's perfectly happy living like a lapdog! One user wrote: Speaking of that Wallace heiress... Do you think Jade might've done something to her? Soon, the internet was filled with conspiracy theories. People confidently analyzed how Jade might have imprisoned, or even murdered, Stephanie Wallace, as if they had personally witnessed it. Many uninformed netizens were stirred into a frenzy. Every detail of Jade's past was dragged out and scrutinized. Her personal information was leaked online. Threatening calls and messages flooded her phone day and night. Jade was exhausted. But the Garza Group's legal and PR departments had only ignored it. "Under no circumstances could the public link Jade with the Garza Group." "A woman with a ruined reputation can't remain Felix's wife. Am I right, Jade?" Naomi said softly on the day of the wedding. She stood in her bridal gown, gazing down at Jade, who was kneeling at her feet, carefully pressing the hem of her dress. Jade didn't answer. She stood up calmly and handed Naomi the bouquet. Naomi's expression darkened. She snatched the flowers, ready to smash them into Jade's face, but Jade spoke first. "There's no time to remake the bouquet. Are you sure you want to ruin it?" Jade reminded her calmly. "You're right. You're not worth it... Give me three months. That's all I need to make Felix throw you out for good. Just you wait, Jade!"
