Large rocks were sometimes braced, sometimes tumbled downhill, sometimes dug behind to create a walkway totally hidden from observers below. Smaller rocks were dug in to provide firm footing. From the base of the cliffs, when they finally reached it, the hill looked undisturbed, even to the eyes of those who did the work. “That’s as fine a Ho Chi Minh trail as I’ve ever made,” Jade proclaimed proudly. “Pardon please my continual ignorance, but what is a Ho Chi Minh trail? I see what this is; I am wondering about the origins of the term.” “It’s an old Terran term, named after a famous general. It’s a concealed trail you can move troops and supplies on. We’ll be making one fast retreat from here. I don’t want a sprained ankle getting us killed, or a suddenly improved road giving us away.”
