Chapter 2

-Amy POV- “Damn it...” I wish the dream could have lasted just a minute longer. With a sigh, I lift my head up and see that Mammon is no longer there. I knew it was only temporary but I will not stop. And now even less so that I know he killed my mother. I don’t remember much from that night but I do remember blood. Lots of it. My mind unconsciously has always wanted to remember. It has always tried through dreams but I won’t let it. I will not let myself remember that. I lift myself up and stretch my hands up. As I lower them down, I look at them. “My powers... he said that I would lose control of them.” I talk to myself. I never had good control over them but I thought I was getting a bit better before the ordeal at Tinsley’s family home. I take the book out and start skimming through its pages. I get to the end without finding anything about what I can do. I also notice that the book seems to be incomplete. It just abruptly stops. I close the book as I look at the pentagram where Mammon stood before. Obviously, he is not there anymore. I nod and get up. I take a matchbox and start lighting up the candles around the pentagram. “You are not getting rid of me so easily and now I have more questions.” I mumble. With the intent of summoning him again and making him just a bit more miserable, I start chanting but a knock on the door interrupts me. I groan as I get up and open the door. Charlotte—dark eyes and dark brown long hair—stands there with her arms crossed, tapping her shoe on the floor. “I have been waiting for ten minutes.” She says and I can tell she is irritated. “Oh... sorry, I slept in.” I nervously laugh. She rolls her eyes and sighs. “Fine, get ready. I’ll wait.” I don’t want to leave now! “Uhm... could we postpone it today? I’m not feeling that great.” I ask. I want to annoy my father more than I want to practice magic. Charlotte has been helping me with my magic this past summer. She and her sister, Aurora, are very powerful witches. This school is filled with werewolves and some vampires but not witches. So all I have been able to learn has been from books. They don't have any witch classes because there weren't any witches other than me here in the school up until now. Witches are rare now. My kind was killed nearly to extinction back when witches were persecuted in the sixteen hundreds. So I grew up without anyone telling me what I was or how to use my magic, even when I joined the academy there still wasn't much they could do to help other than offer me a place where I would be accepted for what I was. An unnatural being. And I am really grateful. Now Charlotte has been teaching me. I think Marco is thinking of making Aurora and her teachers here if he can get other witches to join the school. Aurora and Charlotte come from a powerful bloodline of grand witches and I am grateful to Charlotte that she is doing this for me though I suspect that it is more of a favor to Marco. They seem to have gotten a bit cozy with each other over the last few months. “No..." Charlotte says. "...I am waiting. We are doing this. Discipline is everything. You can’t just flake out the moment you are not feeling good unless it’s something drastic.” She says. “Flake?” I ask because this is not something that looks like she would say. She smiles. “Yes. I have learned a few new words.” I sometimes forget that she and Aurora are not from our time, so her manner of speaking is very different but she seems to be adjusting well. “Well, do you know what playing hooky means?” I ask. She looks confused. “No, what does it mean?” I smile. “This.” I shut the door on her face and start talking through the door. “I’m taking the day off, cutting class, whatever you want to call it.” I hear her gasp. “NO, YOU, ARE, NOT.” She says and suddenly the door swings open. “I am helping you because I know you need the help and my time is very precious. You are coming.” She says. I look at the pentagram in the middle of my room. All I want to do is stay here and summon Mammon, but I know she won’t let this go. I look back at her and see her curiously looking at the pentagram. “What are you doing?” She asks. “Nothing!” I quickly say. I push her outside and close the door behind me. “Okay, fine. Let's get this over with.” She squints her eyes at me but leaves it alone. “Come on. Let's start with some meditation.” I nod and follow her. The last thing I want her to know is that I am doing dangerous magic and even more so that I am summoning a demon prince which I know I probably shouldn’t be doing. But that is one of my problems, I tend to fixate on things and I can’t seem to leave this alone. I want to find a way to destroy him, to make him pay for what he has done to my mother and to my friends. We sit in a small field at the back of the school. Our knees are tucked and our eyes are closed. “Take a deep breath in... and then exhale.” Says Charlotte. I do as she tells me. “Feel the warm sun on your skin, the light touches the wind gives. The fuel the sun gives you. Every witch has a house element that is tied to their bloodline. Air, water, fire, earth.” Her voice is soft and soothing. “Unless you are a grand witch like me and Aurora, you only can use that one element. Fire is the element coursing through your veins. Now focus on it. Feel it through your skin, your fingers but don’t allow it to come forth.” As I concentrate on everything she is saying, I suddenly feel something, or rather someone running in our direction without any intention of stopping. My eyes open to see one of the male werewolves trying to catch a football that is way out of his reach and nearly connecting with my face. “Look out!” He shouts. I don’t even feel it when my instincts kick in. I look at the ball as my insides flare with power. The ball suddenly catches fire and it explodes before it can reach me. The small explosion causes a loud noise and its’ remains scatter all around us with speed. I cover my face, feeling the small prickles of the debris hitting me. “You could have just deviated it from course.” Charlotte says as she pats her clothes and looks at me. “Uh... yeah... that was the intent...” I mumble. I never meant to make the ball explode. My attention goes to the guy that is now sitting on the ground. The small explosion startled him and he fell back. His eyes are wide as he looks at me with a bit of terror. “I... I... I’m sorry.” He says with stutters. There is complete fear in his eyes. They all fear me and now even more. Garnet has told everyone of everything that happened back at Tinsley’s family home. I can barely remember what happened myself after the initial shock of finding out that I was fathered by a demon. Not to mention finding out that demons are real too. I don’t say anything to the guy and just look at my hands. I am more concerned with the fact that my powers have not been getting easier to handle. Even when I have been training with Charlotte. We started this training to help me control them but it seems that my powers are becoming stronger but control is still lacking. And most of this lack of control started after the incident at the manor with Tinsley’s family and the hunters. “You’re okay. Run along.” Charlotte says to the guy who has just been nervously staring at me. He nods and without a second thought, he runs away. Charlotte sighs. “Let's continue.” She stares at me. “You know, this would be much easier if we could find out what type of magic school you are predominant in. Fire houses usually are good at the schools of conjuration and evocation though every witch can still use these schools. However, we have tried every single school and you don’t seem to be predominant in any of them. Or maybe we are missing it. We should do another school test next time.” I sigh because those are exhausting. Besides there being elemental magic tied to a witch’s bloodline like air, fire, water, and earth, there is also a school type. When we say school type, we don’t mean that there is a physical school, it is just what a type of magic is called, schools of magic. Abjuration, conjuration, divination, enchantment, evocation, illusion, necromancy, and transmutation. Any witch can cast any spell under these schools but predominance on one or multiple of these is also tied to the bloodline of a witch. I have tried each exam from each magic school and I have been mediocre at best on every single one and demonic powers are not a witch power so that doesn’t count. My classes with Charlotte last about an hour. When we are done, I rush back to my room. When I am inside, I close my door and as I lean on it, I look at the pentagram. I take a deep breath and gather what I need. I kneel in front of the stared circle and light the candles as I chant the astral summoning spell. When I finish my chant, I open my eyes with the expectation of seeing my father in front of me but he isn't there. “... What happened?” I ask myself. “This is dangerous!” I jump when I hear Charlotte behind me. “What do you think you are doing, Amy?” “What are you doing here?” I ask, shocked that she is behind me and I didn’t even notice. “I saw you were up to something this morning and when your practices were done, you were in a rush, so as a responsible adult, I decided to spy on you.” She says. I narrow my eyes. “Responsible adult?” “Shush, now tell me what are you doing... though you don’t really have to because I can see what you are doing. This is dangerous, Amy.” “I am being careful and besides... it’s not working anymore.” She sighs. “Who is it... your dad?” “Yeah.” I say feeling a bit ashamed. “Well, it should have worked. I saw how you did it and you did it correctly.” She says. I already know that much. I have been doing it for the last couple of weeks but of course, she doesn’t need to know that. “Then what happened?” I ask. “There is always a way to negate a spell. My guess is...” She stops and puts her finger under her chin, thinking. “Well... the only reason you wouldn’t be able to astral summon him is because he bound himself to a body.” “He bound himself to a body? How?” “You have heard how demons can possess a body, a person?" She asks. I nod and think of that old horrible movie. “Same thing. It is temporary because his powers would be too much for a mortal body and it would kill the host but for now, he found his loophole.” “Damn it!” I curse. “What do I do now?” “Nothing." She says. "Leave it alone. Go downstairs and... spend time with your friends.” I groan. She crosses her arms. “I’m telling Marco.” I groan again. Don’t get me wrong. I like spending time with Connor, Tinsley, and the others. But I am so fixated on this. I hate having an unresolved business. I look at the pentagram with concern. “Stop worrying.” She says. “We have been preparing in case he does come for you or Tinsley. Aurora and I have put wards all around the school. He can’t get in. You are safe here.” Even knowing how powerful she and Aurora are, it still worries me but I know that worrying will accomplish nothing. There is nothing I can do so I might as well leave it for now. “Okay.” I start heading out. We both go out of my room but she stops and looks at me with squinted eyes. “Have you seen Garnet?” “I... have.” “Uh, so she is hiding from me... I mean he.” She says. I chuckle. “He is miserable right now.” “Good. I’m not changing him back. He has to find out how to do that on his own.” She says. “What did he, she, do exactly?” I ask. “She tried to make Marco drink an infatuation potion.” I start laughing because I know that is something Garnet would actually do. “Oh, Garnet.”
