• CHAPTER 2
“WHAAAAT?!!” Amelia’s scream was ear splitting. They were in her stylish apartment with two bottles of wine on the floor testament to the evening’s shocking revelations. “He touched you? And was with a motorcycle? This is…..definitely a romance novel hero gurl”, i guess you have been cast as the lead.
“I know, right!”, still blushing from the recall, the words sighing out of her as she cuddled a pillow. The memory of the wind whipping through her hair, the potent rumble of the engine between her thighs, and the unyielding strength of his torso against her back played on a loop in her mind. “He was so completely out of character. So… blunt and fierce. It was like he’d shed his three-piece suit and became someone else entirely.”
“Okay, hold up a minute. Let’s pump the brakes on this fantasy. This is weird, right? Objectively strange. He has never shown you a single green light before, not a lingering glance, not a too-personal question, nothing. And then BOOM! Midnight motorcycle rescue drama? There’s something… suspicious about that timing.”
“I think maybe the family meeting rattled him,” Skylar suggested, her voice dreamy as she tried to rationalize the irrational. “All that pressure from his father about legacy and marriage. Maybe it made him loosen up, finally act on something he actually wants.”
“Or maybe it made him act *out*,” Amelia countered, her dark brown eyes intent and serious. “Sky, think. A reclusive, powerful billionaire boss and his pretty, hopelessly naïve secretary? That’s not a romance novel trope, it’s a cautionary tale. This never, ever ends well for the secretary. I’m telling you, be careful. His operates on a different frequency, and you’re completely clueless”
She was living in technicolor now.
But Skylar’s heart was already fluttering. At the office the next day, it was like a brutal return to monochrome. Hayden was his usual self, reserved, polished and distinct. He reviewed contracts without a hint of emotion, and passed her desk without so much as a flicker of recognition in his stormy blue eyes. He showed no signs of their experience the previous day, it was as if nothing ever happened. The dissonance was deafening.
She was so confused. Was it a dream? Was he regretting his moment of weakness? Her confusion sucked down her concentration. She jumped every time her phone rang, every email notification, only to be met with crushing disappointment.
Her answer came later that evening as she sat on her bed. Her phone buzzed, she got a text from an unknown number. The message was simple, yet it made her blood hum.
*Unknown Number* ‘Still reflecting on our conversation yesterday. I think you're intriguing. H.’
Her blood ran cold, it was actually him. He’d gotten her number from her employee file which was supposed to be confidential. It was unprofessional and an abuse of power but she still felt excited. He had been thinking about her. He’d crossed a line to tell her so.
Her fingers trembled and her heart racing as she typed a reply, ‘I’ve been thinking about it too, sir,’* she typed back, then deleted the formal ‘sir’. *‘…Hayden.’ It felt wrong now. That night had changed everything so she settled on ‘Hayden.’
The three dancing dots appeared almost instantly. His response was not a question but a command.
‘Good, let's meet tonight at Lavender Park, at the end of Primrose Lane at 10pm’. Discretion is appreciated.’
It was an exciting and scary order not an invitation. Everything was moving at a velocity that stole her breath. This was precisely the shadowy, controlling behavior Amelia had warned her against. Meeting in secret, late at night, on a deserted street… It was the start of every horror movie Amelia had ever quoted. But it was also *HAYDEN*. The man whose mere presence had dictated her heartbeat for two years. The man of her most secret dreams.
She called Amelia, who answered on the first ring. “Don’t you dare, Skylar. Don’t you dare go. This is how you end up on a true crime podcast. ‘He was so charming, so powerful, I just thought he was mysterious!’ No. Absolutely not.”
Amelia warned her over the phone not to go saying it was the start of a horror movie but skylar wouldn’t listen. The naive and lover girl and naive part of her won, saying she knows and sure it’s him. Though the words sounded hollow even to her. “I’m sure it’s him, i have to see.”
Determined to step into the fantasy, she wore a red dress Amelia herself had lent her for a date weeks ago, a garment that promised confidence she didn't feel. The Uber ride to Lavender Park was a blur of nervous nausea and frantic heartbeats.
The location was not the public park she’d expected, but a gated, secluded enclave. The address led her to a beautiful, modern minimalist small house, all sharp angles and dark glass, standing alone like a sleek monolith. This was a private property or a hide out not the Brooks mansion.
The door opened silently just as she was about to knock on the pristine door and he stood there. The familiar, expensive scent swamped over her, an olfactory signature that screamed *Hayden Brooks*. He had a blue top and black shorts on, a version of him she’d never seen.
“You're here,” he said with a smile, his voice sounded different……stiff, perhaps it was the lack of office acoustics. But the faint light inside the house clouded his expression.
“Yes I am,” she replied in a soft distinct voice, a whisper in the tense quiet of the night.
He moved aside to let her in, his gaze was all over the red dress. He was looking at her dress with so much eagerness which made her shudder. The ambience of the house felt dark and like a showplace with expensive art on the wall.
“Do you care for a drink?” he asked, without waiting to get an answer he walked to a minimalist bar side and poured two glasses of drinks. He handed her one. His hands grazed against hers, and the connection was charged with tension that felt dangerous.“
Skylar,” he said, “I must confess, I was skeptical about you”, not looking at her but into his own glass. “I wasn’t sure you were daring.”“Skylar,”
The statement was like a shock. “Skeptical?” she asked, confused. “About my work?”
A low chuckle. “No. Not your work. I wasn’t sure you were… daring.”
An uneasy quiet settled between them with uncertainty and unspoken tension. Confused, she asked “what are you getting at?”
He turned then, and his blue eyes, usually so sharp and perceptive, were shadowed, utterly unreadable. “To consent to an invitation like this… from your boss. To come to a secluded house, late at night, alone.” He took a step closer. “It’s reckless. And I find… I like it.”
Before she could grasp his odd slightly menacing statement, he drew closer,” he said with a rough voice that dropped to a whisper, “since the very first day i set my eyes on you have always wanted to do this”.
And then he kissed her.
The kiss was rough, possessive and hungry, it was nothing like the passionate moment she had envisioned, it wasn't a slow and passionate awakening. It was a conquest, not a question. It had the familiar burn of expensive whiskey and something dark and riveting. Her thoughts, muddled by nerves, adrenaline, and the compelling kiss, excused it. *This is his passion,* she thought. *This is what he hides behind the calm exterior.*
Giving in, she kissed him back, a decision that seemed to detonate whatever fragile restraint was left. The situation deepened in a blur of motion, stumbling through the dark, minimalist house, past doorways that led into deeper shadows, until they fell into a bedroom. The space was lit only by a large window and the silvery path the moon cast upon a lake beyond. In the dim, ethereal light, his face was all sharp, familiar angles and intriguing shadow. The hawk-like nose, the strong jaw, it was *him*. It had to be him.
Reason dissolved, washed away on a tide of sensation and long-held yearning. She gave herself to the moment, to the man she believed was her boss, her love, finally seeing her. The real world, Amelia’s warnings, the strangeness of it all, faded into a distant hum, silenced by the overwhelming reality of his touch.
