Trevor scanned his surroundings as Jesse left him. His day had been rather boring. The only bright spot the entire day was Jesse. While not impressive looking by some standards, Trevor saw him in a different light. He had been wonderful to be around. Especially when he talked about mythology.
He watched as there was a spark in his eyes as he explained his favorite subject. He found himself being drawn to him. It was a strange sensation, as he normally had that effect on others. He wasn’t sure why, but he felt the need to know Jesse even more. Deciding that he wanted to know more, Trevor started to walk after him, hoping he would catch up.
As he rounded the corner, he heard commotion coming from down the street. Concerned, he began to run. When he saw Jesse on the ground being pummeled by five people, something snapped in him. Rage bubbled up inside of him. He quickly regained his composure. He called out the bullies, warning them to back off.
He expected them to refuse. Why wouldn’t they? They had numbers on their side. Trevor smirked as they approached him. He had been training to fight his entire life. These poor kids stood no chance as he merely played with them, using their momentum against them.
The bullies hightailed it out of there. Trevor smiled.
‘That was fun, wasn’t it Akira’ Trevor said. His wolf grunted in agreement. Akira was not much of a talker. He preferred his stoic silence. Ever since he turned 12, Akira had been with Trevor. The Moon Goddess had paired them together, and that very night, he transformed into a werewolf for the very first time. Akira was an Alpha, top of the food chain as far as werewolf packs went.
Trevor had left his pack in search of his mate two years ago. He had known he left prematurely. A werewolf will not be able to sense their mate’s presence until their 18th birthday. Still, Trevor had insisted. He needed to find his mate before the Warlock Order returned.
After Trevor took care of Jesse, even going as far to give him one of his specialized pills that helped reduce the pain felt when the bone structure of a new werewolf manifested after its transformation. He was relieved when he saw Jesse’s pain subside drastically. As he looked at Jesse, he noticed something in his eyes that he had not noticed before. The brown was complemented by small flecks of gold. Trevor was unsure if it was actually there, or if it was the sunlight reflecting off of them.
Jesse had left him alone again after he rescued him from the bullies. Trevor found Jesse to be different from other humans he had met. He was a gentle soul, who cared more deeply than he would care to admit. He saw Jesse as what humankind was meant to be.
“By the Goddess, I really hope that boy is my mate. Either that, or you’re cruel.” Trevor said out loud. Akira chuffed in amusement, clearly entertained by Trevor’s reaction. He decided to tail him, just to make sure the bullies did not bother him.
He followed Jesse until he found himself outside the town’s only hospital. Trevor furrowed his brow in confusion. He made the assumption that Jesse went there to receive medical attention. Perhaps he was more injured than Trevor originally thought. He wanted to follow, but decided against it.
Trevor sighed heavily, turning away from the hospital and heading home. After about a 12 mile hike, he arrived safely in his home. His old pack had afforded him a large sum of money to ensure that he could travel from place to place unhindered. Trevor had bought this house, mainly because it was so far out of the way and was about 100 yards away from the forest. If he had to let Akira out for exercise, it was a simple matter of heading there.
Trevor looked out the window of his home. His mind wandered to Jesse. He wondered what he was up to. His nose was great, but even from this distance, he could not smell him. He didn’t even know where he lived. He sighed and sat down on his couch and started his homework.
He hated human schools. They failed to teach anything useful to navigating their lives, which left a majority of them unprepared for the real world. He missed his school at the packhouse. Trevor numbly worked on the schoolwork in front of him, letting the work in front of him distract him from his thoughts of Jesse.
He suddenly smelled an unfamiliar scent approaching his home. Trevor froze. The person he did not recognize, but the scent of magic was unmistakable. He rose to his feet, going to open the door, just as the person lifted their hand to knock.
“So. I was right. There is a werewolf here.” the girl said. She looked at him directly in the eyes. Trevor could tell that this girl was powerful. More powerful than any spellcaster he had met before. Standing in front of her, Trevor could now confirm what she was.
“Warlock, huh. Come here to kill me?” Trevor asked her. Akira growled low in his throat. It took all of Trevor’s willpower to resist him. She looked at him curiously, her eyes never wavering from his. She sighed before she responded.
“Not really, no. I was merely curious. Never been one to care about werewolves and warlocks constantly fighting one another. I would much rather live out my life and be normal, you know?” the girl said. Trevor took a step back in surprise. Her response even gave Akira pause. Trevor then smiled at her, the tension from his body relaxing slightly.
“Ah, well if that is the case, then perhaps we just attempt to ignore one another. Problem solved!” Trevor offered as he outstretched his hand. She took it, and smiled. Then, she vanished, as if she was never there in the first place. Trevor realized it must have been a projection, a magical copy. Trevor closed the door and sat back down.
He ran his hands across his face and through his hair. Sighing softly, Trevor continued to work on his homework. After about another hour, he finished. Akira yipped, telling him that he was hungry. Trevor felt hungry as well. He walked into the kitchen and began to make steak.
Once he finished eating, Trevor decided to relax on the porch for a while. Grabbing one of his lawn chairs from the closet, he stepped outside. Unfolding the chair, he sat it on the porch and sat down. He looked up at the sky. It was a new moon. This was when he was most disconnected from Akira.
He knew that a fight with that warlock was suicide, especially tonight. She must have known it too. That’s why she decided to show up on his doorstep, when the cards were all in her hand. He cursed softly, irritated that he could be so clueless. Trevor pulled his phone out of his pocket and sent a message to Gideon, the current alpha of his old pack and closest friend.
‘Found a warlock here. She stands on neutral ground. No threat. She is extremely powerful however.’ he hit send, then looked back up at the sky. His phone chimed, causing him to look back down moments later.
‘How powerful are we talking?’ was his response.
‘Warlock elder or higher at least.’ Trevor typed. In truth, he was unsure how to classify her. He had faced a warlock elder before. And even he paled in comparison to the amount of magical presence she emanated.
‘Keep an eye on her. Found your mate yet? The pack misses you.’ Gideon responded. Trevor chuckled. This was always how their conversations ended up.
‘Perhaps.’ was how Trevor decided to respond. He then opened a message to Jesse. Looking at the time, Trevor was sure he was asleep by now. He smiled.
‘Good night J’ Trevor typed. His finger hovered over the send button for an entire minute. He couldn’t understand why he was so nervous to just send a message. He closed his eyes and hit send. He stared at the phone screen intently. The message delivered. After about 5 minutes of staring, the message switched from ‘delivered’ to ‘read.’ Trevor waited in anticipation of what the response would be.
After about another 10 minutes, Trevor realized that he would not be getting a response. He sighed and went back inside. It had gotten really late, and Trevor was nodding off in the lawn chair. He walked inside and sat down on his bed. Stretching tiredly, Trevor laid down and closed his eyes, falling asleep.
Even his dreams were no safe haven from Jesse’s smile.
