Guinevere began to get nervous as the time drew near for the first meeting at the rooms Edmund had taken. She went over a number of possible scenarios in her mind. But what if Edmund should not respond as she wished? She had been certain that her instincts were correct, but as the time came closer she had her doubts. There had been no problem with the boys at Mrs Atkinson’s. They were all hand-picked, already known to be amenable to discipline and correction. She didn’t have to persuade any of them that such things were enjoyable. But Edmund might run a mile at the first sight of the cane.
