Chapter Nine Once they had settled on the dates, Lydia’s friend got to work on the arrangements. A week later, early in the morning, they set off, meeting at Victoria Station to catch the boat train to Dover. There they embarked on the ferry that would take them across the Channel. Guinevere was excited; she had never been in anything bigger than a rowing-boat. It was thrilling to stand in the bows of the ship and look out for the coast of France ahead, and look behind to see the foaming, creamy wake they left behind, and the white cliffs of Dover receding in the background.
