Chapter one

The rain hid Maras' tears as she wished, hiding the pain and heartache she felt when she was being rejected by her boyfriend, Mark, while she was pregnant. Alone, feeling lost and betrayed, Mara couldn't help but wonder if it was her fault that she was left abandoned with the baby by the man who claimed to love her. Was there a sigh she had missed or had misread that could have spared her this moment of shame and humiliation? She was homeless, had no money, and no family to lean on. As she was walking, the phone rang, and just on time, no doubt, it was Lila, her best friend, checking up on her. Her voice gave her emotions away as she tried so hard to hide them in her response. Lila asked her to have dinner and catch up, as if she knew something was wrong. The two had an amazing time, she almost forgot she was not ok till Lila asked about her boyfriend, a sad face filled Mara's face as tears dropped down, she couldn't hide or hold back no matter how hard she tried. Lila came over to her side and comforted her ,insisting she stay with her and Daniel, her husband, for a couple of months till the baby arrived, seeing she was pregnant and all, but none of them were ready for what was about to unfold. Secrets would be discovered, truth uncovered, and betrayal would soon test this long-term friendship. The next day, A warm smile greeted Mara as she walked into the house, Daniel she said, it's been a long time since we saw each other. " She greeted him back with a mutual warm smile.Lila walked her to her room after a gentle and kind greeting kiss from Daniel This is where you'll be staying she said to her, giving her a comforting pat on her shoulders, letting her know she is welcome without using words, Thank you Mara she replied as she looked at the white linen sheets that were prepared for her. I hope u feel at home, added Daniel with another warm smile. What's for dinner ? he asked his wife, I'm starving he said, looking at Lila with anticipation. Oh, your favorite spaghetti and mince, I also bought a bottle of wine on my way from work to welcome Mara, she added. You really shouldn't have said Mara. I already feel like a burden by staying here. Nonsense, said Lila. u are like a sister to me. Feel free to ask for anything u need. What comforting words, thought Mara to herself, feeling better than she had in a long time . The truth is, my relationship with Mark has not been ok for a while, she confessed to Lila. I overlooked all the signs and kept hoping things would get better. He has been lying and cheating on me for a while now, added Mara. I honestly don't know why I thought he could change. Anyway, she sighed I pray that my baby will be ok. Don't think too much, just relax, forget about Mark, his a jerk anyway replied Lila, showing her to the dining table.
