CHAPTER 14 MAUREEN The echo of my heels trailed behind us as we made our way through the hall, Domenico’s long strides eating up the space. He didn’t wait for me, of course. Domenico never waited. The guards at the entrance opened the doors, and the warm afternoon breeze hit my skin. The black Maybach was parked out front, the engine purring like a beast barely held back. Domenico slid into the backseat without a word, and I followed, shutting the door behind me. The driver pulled away smoothly, tinted windows separating us from the outside world.
