CHAPTER 21 MAUREEN I woke up to silence. I sat up, pressing the heel of my hand to my temple. “Coward,” I muttered to the empty room. He suspected me. After everything I’d done, everything I’d proved, he still thought I was capable of betrayal. That stung more than it should’ve. And now he was acting like I had wronged him? I didn’t eat breakfast. I barely spoke to the guards who greeted me. I didn’t even ask where he was, though part of me—traitor that it was—wanted to know. By evening, the fury that had built up inside me had nowhere else to go. So I went to the training room. I threw myself into drills, my limbs moving fast, sharp. Jab. Cross. Uppercut. Again. And again. Sweat rolled down my spine, my muscles burning in that addicting way that made me feel alive—controlled. F
