If a dispute could not be solved with soft words or polite arbitration, and resulted in a genuine bout of fisticuffs, then both sides were considered the losers for such a crass display. It didn’t matter who had started it, what mattered was that emotions had run high enough to cause the involved parties to attack one another like animals without language. If two or more parties wanted a fight, then they were required to find an unaffiliated mediator to stand by to dispense judgement and ensure that none of the combatants attempted to cheat their way to victory.
