Whispered Vows

Chapter 1 The Stranger in the Rain The rain came down in relentless sheets, turning the cobblestone streets of Bellhaven into a shimmering maze. Aurora Sinclair pulled her coat tighter around her shoulders, her breath coming out in soft clouds as she hurried toward her favorite café. She had always loved the rain—except today, when she was already running late. As she reached for the café door, a tall figure stepped in front of her. He moved so swiftly she almost crashed into him. “Excuse me,” she murmured, looking up. Dark, piercing blue eyes met hers, sending an unfamiliar shiver down her spine. The stranger was dressed in a tailored black coat, his sharp jawline softened only by the drizzle clinging to his skin. For a moment, he just stared at her—long enough to make her heart stutter. Then, he smiled. “You’re late.” Aurora frowned. “I don’t—” Before she could finish, he opened the door and gestured for her to step inside. Confused but intrigued, she walked past him into the warmth of the café. The scent of freshly brewed coffee and vanilla filled the air, wrapping around her like an old, familiar embrace. She turned to thank him, but he was already at the counter, ordering two drinks. “Aurora, there you are!” A familiar voice called from the corner. She turned and spotted Olivia, her best friend, waving from their usual spot. Aurora sighed in relief and made her way over. “I just had the strangest—” Aurora started, but Olivia cut her off with a mischievous grin. “Let me guess. Tall, dark, and dangerously handsome?” Aurora blinked. “How did you—” “Because he’s walking over here.” Aurora’s heart flipped as the stranger approached, two steaming cups in hand. He set one in front of her without a word before sitting down. Olivia smirked. “I see you two have met. Aurora, this is—” “Leo Callahan,” he said smoothly, his eyes never leaving Aurora’s. “And I believe we have unfinished business.” Chapter Two: A Deal with a Stranger Aurora’s fingers tightened around the cup. “I think you have the wrong person.” Leo’s lips curved into a knowing smile. “I don’t think I do.” Olivia cleared her throat. “Okay, I should probably mention that Leo is my brother’s best friend. And he’s also…” She hesitated. Leo leaned in, his voice low. “Your fiancé.” Aurora choked on her coffee. “Excuse me?!” Leo sighed, amusement flickering in his gaze. “It’s complicated.” “Complicated?” Aurora hissed. “Try insane.” Leo set his coffee down. “Your father and mine had an agreement. A promise made before either of us were born. And now, they expect us to uphold it.” Aurora felt the ground shift beneath her. “An arranged marriage?” Leo nodded. “I wouldn’t have believed it either, but your father called mine last week.” He studied her. “You didn’t know, did you?” “No,” she whispered. “I didn’t.” A storm of emotions swirled inside her—anger, confusion, disbelief. She had spent her entire life making her own choices. She wasn’t about to let two old men decide her future. She pushed her chair back. “Well, tell them no.” Leo’s expression darkened. “I wish it were that simple.” Aurora scoffed. “It is. You and I are strangers. This isn’t the 18th century.” Leo exhaled, rubbing the back of his neck. “Look, I’m not thrilled about this either. But my family… they expect me to honor the agreement. And if I refuse—” He hesitated. Aurora narrowed her eyes. “What happens if you refuse?” Leo hesitated before finally saying, “My father will cut me off. And yours…” His gaze softened. “Your father might lose everything.” Aurora’s stomach twisted. Her father had worked his entire life to build Sinclair Enterprises. I Leo leaned forward, his voice gentler now. “I’m not here to force you into anything. But if we pretend—just for a little while—we can figure out another way.” Aurora studied him. There was something about Leo Callahan—something unreadable, like a puzzle she wasn’t sure she wantedChapter Three: A Dangerous Game Aurora barely slept that night. The weight of her decision pressed down on her chest, making it impossible to breathe freely. She had agreed to fake an engagement with a man she barely knew—one who, despite his composed exterior, radiated an unsettling intensity. Morning light spilled through her bedroom window as she paced the length of her apartment, her phone clutched in her trembling hands. She had to call her father. Demand answers. Just as she mustered the courage to dial, a sharp knock echoed through her apartment. Her heart leaped into her throat. She wasn’t expecting anyone. She approached the door cautiously, peeking through the peephole. Leo Callahan. Aurora exhaled sharply before yanking the door open. “What are you doing here?” Leo leaned against the doorframe, looking maddeningly composed for someone who had just turned her life upside down. “I figured you’d have questions.” Understatement of the year. She crossed her arms. “How considerate. You could’ve just called.” Leo’s lips curved into something between a smirk and a challenge. “We have to make this believable, Aurora. That starts now.” She narrowed her eyes. “And that means showing up at my doorstep at—” she glanced at the clock, “—seven in the morning?” Leo stepped inside without waiting for an invitation. “It means we need to be seen together. The sooner people believe we’re engaged, the easier this will be.” Aurora scoffed, shutting the door behind him. “Right. And what exactly do you have in mind? Candlelit dinners? Staged paparazzi photos?” Leo’s expression turned serious. “Something like that. But first—we meet your father.” Her breath hitched. “What?” “You need to hear it from him,” Leo said. “You deserve that much.” Aurora felt her stomach twist. She wanted answers, but she wasn’t sure she was ready for what they’d reveal. Still, she nodded. “Fine. Let’s go.” Thirty minutes later, they stood outside the towering Sinclair Enterprises building. Aurora’s palms were damp as she stepped through the grand entrance, her heels clicking against the marble floor. Leo walked beside her, exuding quiet confidence. When they reached her father’s office, she barely hesitated before pushing the doors open. Robert Sinclair looked up from his desk, surprise flashing across his face before settling into something unreadable. “Aurora.” His gaze flickered to Leo. “I assume you’ve heard.” Aurora clenched her fists. “Tell me it isn’t true.” Her father sighed, rubbing his temples. “I wish I could.” “Why?” Her voice cracked. “Why would you agree to something like this?” Robert’s eyes darkened. “Because I had no choice.” Silence stretched between them, thick with unspoken truths. Aurora swallowed hard. “Then tell me the truth.” Her father hesitated for a long moment before finally saying, “Because if I didn’t, I’d lose everything.” Leo tensed beside her. Aurora’s pulse pounded in her ears. She had agreed to play a role—but now, she wasn’t sure if she was walking into a script or a trap. And worst of all… she wasn’t sure she could trust either man standing before her to solve. Finally, she spoke. “You want us to fake an engagement?” Leo nodded. “Just long enough to buy time. Long enough to protect both our families.” Aurora took a slow breath, her heart pounding. She had always believed love should be a choice, not an obligation. But this wasn’t love. It was a deal. And against her better judgment, she found herself whispering, “Okay.” Chapter Two A Deal with a Stranger Aurora’s fingers tightened around the cup. “I think you have the wrong person.” Leo’s lips curved into a knowing smile. “I don’t think I do.” Olivia cleared her throat. “Okay, I should probably mention that Leo is my brother’s best friend.
