Chapter two The new world 2001 first Dimension: 2001 That Friday was as usual, a beautiful sunny day, everyone on the streets of Queens, NYC, went about their usual bustling and hustling, creating an atmosphere of love and happiness. Richard was on his way to his girlfriend's coffee shop as early as the morning bird, to help set up the place. He passed by the gigantic building of the Central Animal Science Laboratory of New York, America. It was one of the best sightings for Richard, he loves how the scientists look gloriously important in white lab coats, one day he'd be a scientist and he'd then propose to Amanda, he envisioned with a smile of admiration as he walked past the scene. But just as he was about to crossover to Amanda's Tea House, there was an explosive sound from the inside of the Laboratory, and everyone became abrupt and worried, as they all stood watching the building collapse slowly... The night before that day.... Inside the Central Laboratory, Dr. Hatchet, an animal scientist was busy mixing chemicals and writing down his observations, when Miss. Sophie walked in. "You are still working?" She wondered aloud, surprised to see him intensely deep in his experiment. "Sophie come see this," said the excited scientist. He picked up his writing pad and showed her saying "I found a new formula. Though there are loopholes but I'm working on it" "Really? Let me see," taking it, she saw some drawings and calculations and was impressed. "I'm gonna be rich!" Shriek the bemused scientist. Rubbing his palms in friction, he continued with his experiment. His colleague who was already wide-eyed shocked by his childish display rolled her eyes in exasperation. "Well Hatchie, this is good, but you might want to slow down a bit. I mean, this is new alright and it's cool," she said, trading nicely, "but we don't know what it does, if it's going to be good or bad news." She concluded, dropping the writing pad on the table with a thud, shaking Hatchet off Balance. "Careful Sophie, I'm working here" he said, gritting his teeth, "We don't want these substances spilling over okay? And don't worry," he continued, "I've got all these covered. I won't start out any experiment without creating an antidote first" "And the animals?" asked Sophie with a stern look and her arms folded. He paused from his writing pad to slowly look at Sophie, from her short black heels, up her slender body, to the incredible young face of the thirty-two years old blondie, "I will start with the harmless and smallest of them", he scowled and went back taking down notes. He was obviously getting tired of being questioned by the all so intelligent and gorgeous woman in front of him, she was physically a distraction to him. "I'm just concerned Hatchie, these animals may look innocent and harmless today, but dangerous tomorrow, so whatever you do, just be extremely careful", and with that, she turned and walked to the door, ignoring the dazed Hatchet who felt like he had never been schooled so badly in his thirty-seven years of age. "And goodnight!" Sophie shot at him, with a smile to herself, as she shut the door behind her. A beautiful sunny Friday morning.... The people of Queen's Ville stood horrified at the explosive sound and collapsing artistic building of the central Laboratory of New York. And just then, the glorious scientists who are not so glorious anymore ran out screaming, "Run for your life!" some were shouting, "Take cover!" there was a particular scientist on khaki, he was short and haggard looking, one would think he escaped the asylum, he kept screaming "Monsters! Monsters! We are all gonna die!" Richard was starting to move backwards in fear of the unknown when he felt the vibration on the ground, everyone were taking to their heels, but it was not the heels of everyone that caused the vibration, he ran into the shop and almost ram into Amanda. "B-babe we have to go now" he said hurriedly as he takes her hand. "W- what's happening?" She enquires in fear "I heard an explosion outside" she removed her apron with shaky hands. "C'mon there's no time, I will tell you some bits on the way" he replied, tautly. They rushed outside when they heard another bang and sirens at the background- the police were already here. The sight they both met almost got Amanda choked in fear, a gigantic rat-like animal has emerged from the now collapsed building with a loud shriek. The street was almost empty of people except for the police and reporters. More monster-like animals were still emerging, these were lab animals, and an accident must have occured to have affected a lot of them in the lab. Richard and Amanda ran hand in hand to her place, it was the closest haven they could find. A two story tenement, standing four blocks away from the coffee shop. They ran upstairs to her room, while she tries to open her door, Richard banged on the door opposite hers, it was Federick's, their very good friend. Richard and Frederick have come a long way, since the day he saved Amanda from a fire accident in her room, Richard has felt less worries for her safety now, knowing there is a person like Frederick in the picture. "Frederick open up!" And instantly the door opened, they both followed Amanda to her room. Amanda hurriedly picked up some items while Richard explain to the duo what he thinks could be happening. "So you are saying, they're giant filthy animals on the loose?" Probed Frederick unbelievably. "Monsters Frederick! Monsters!" Emphasized the trembling Amanda. She and Richard had been in the scene afer all. Just then the News reel in on TV as report shows that a Dr Hatchet who had made the chemical mixtures, founded a new formula and was happy to experiment on it. But out of stress; for he had an all night studying, he slept off and mistakenly knocked down chemicals, which spilled and got to a number of lab animals that are now gigantic. What used to be rats, frogs, lizards; are now that, and even worse. Far behind the reporter, a man was seen swallowed up by a huge frog before the News ended, this chilled the trio down to their marrow. "Okay guys," Frederick broke the silence, "We are not gonna survive this world, even if we elope to another country. It's only in a matter of time before these animals spread destruction and peril." "So what else is there to do?" Wondered Amanda. "Time travel," Frederick blurted out his idea. "What...?" Amanda quavered even more. "It's the only way babe-" Richard chipped in, obviously not new to the idea. He has been silent for a while, watching Amanda quaver in fear since she came face to face with that monster. "Richard!" Amanda interrupted in shock. No one has ever been through a portal before, as far as she knows, theories like this has not yet been approved. "Amanda think about your mental health. You can't bear the sight of violence. This is the only way we can keep you safe from all that", he reminded her. "Oh so now I'm the reason why we're doing this? Well I'm sorry but I'm not leaving." When she came here packing things to elope, she never thought it'd be leaving the world entirely. "Amanda--!" Richard grits his teeth in furrow. "Guys!" Frederick cuts in, "That's enough, there is no time for this right now. And Amanda, I know you're scared, but if it'd make you feel better, know that I have taken time to study and perfect this theory. And in no time we should be in another dimension safe and sound. I know this is new but it's our only chance of survival. When we get settled I promise we'll do our best to save our world, but for now, there is nothing we can do for this world. Trust me." While Frederick was busy giving Amanda a mouthful, she and Richard were having a staring competition, both angry at each other.
