Valerie's pov My breath hitched, my head snapping to the man instantly. “What's wrong?” The man hesitated. “Someone initiated a withdrawal from the company.” I rolled my eyes, exhaling in relief. I didn't need anyone to tell me it was Adrian again. This should be the sixth time he was taking money from that company and I was sure this time was to get ‘baby’s stuff.’ I haven't even taken over and he wants to bankrupt it. “Process it,” I ordered, pushing open the door to my office. “Ma'am, the company's–” “I said you should process it,” I snapped through gritted teeth, cutting him off sharply. “Are you trying to question me?” “Not at all,” the man said, bowing his head. “I'll get going now.” “Ma'am, you should–” I glanced towards his direction, giving him a cold glare which shut him up immediately. “Go get the meeting room ready,” I said, dismissing him. He nodded, turning around and heading out without waiting for a second. It was until I closed my office door after me that I finally released the breath I was holding. For some reasons, the thought of Adrian using the money from my company to spoil a baby carried by another woman irritated me. I dumped my bag and coat on the coach before walking briskly towards my desk. I slumped into my chair before moving the files on my desk to get started with work but when I raised the first file, a black envelope fell out. My brows furrowed as I picked up the black envelope inside were three things; a gold necklace with an orchid flower pattern on it, a happy birthday card with a love emoji and a special invitation to a masked gala. I wasn't surprised about the necklace or the card because I've been receiving a gift and that same card for more than five years now on my birthday but the invitation was an exception. I glanced at it for sometime before dropping it and picking up the necklace, this was the first time whoever was giving me a necklace. It was always a check or a villa. I was still admiring it when a knock came on my door. “Come in,” I said after the fourth knock. The door opened and my second assistant, Sarah, walked in. “Oh my gawd!” She gushed when she saw the necklace. “That's so beautiful. Was it a gift from your husband?” I nodded, lowering the necklace, Sarah had a big mouth and I wasn't ready for more rumors circulating about me in the company. “Let me put it on you,” she suggested, approaching me. “Sure,” I smiled, stretching the necklace towards her. I should at least put it on my neck to thank the person for remembering to celebrate my big day. She took the necklace from me and shifted my hair before fixing it on my neck. I stood up when she was done staring at it from my office mirror. “This looks so breathtaking on your skin,” Sarah complimented with a smile. Sarah always had sugar-coated tongue but I wouldn't lie at how beautiful the necklace looked. “Thanks,” I mumbled, returning to my chair. “What brings you to my office?” “Happy birthday, Ma'am.” She said before placing the files she had entered with on my desk. “I'm sure I'm the one that wished you first so can I get a raise?” I looked at her puzzled, I was the one celebrating the birthday so why should I be the one gifting her. “I know you're the one celebrating but you know…” she said, waggling her eyebrows. I let out a low chuckle. Sarah was one of the people that always made work less stressful for me. A knock came on the door before I could part my lips. “Come in,” I said and Wilson stepped in looking all serious. “Ma'am, the meeting is starting in five minutes.” He said, glancing at Sarah. “I’ll be there soon,” I said, straightening my posture. Wilson bowed slightly before walking out of my office. I picked a pen and paper and quickly scribbled something on it before handing it to Sarah. “Go to the finance department and tell them to give you a raise,” I said, standing up. “You can tell them any amount you want.” “Are you kidding me?!” Sarah squealed. “Thank you, ma'am.” “Don't mention,” I said, watching her run toward the door. “Don't be greedy.” She let out a giggle which I knew too well to be ‘I’ll try my best not to be’ before running out of the office. I grabbed my phone and coat before heading to the conference room. *** Two long boring hours have passed and I was still sitting here listening to the gibberish the man standing in front of the projector was saying. Don't get me wrong, I want to be in conference rooms and own a company but I don't want one that will be talking about acquiring land and building what God knows what on it. I'll rather be in one that's talking about developing a robot or a new software or something technology in it. My grandmother seems to know me best as she left one for me and I couldn't wait to finally own it. “Ma’am,” Wilson tapped me, dragging me back to consciousness. I lifted my gaze to different pairs of eyes boring into me that was when I realized I had zoned out for a long time. “What were you saying, Mr. David?” I asked the man in front of the projector. “I was asking you if you understood what I had said,” David asked, calmly even though he seemed pissed off. I wouldn't blame him though because it wasn't easy to store that boring stuff in his brain. “Sure,” I replied, skimming through the document before me. “Send the last draft to my office. The meeting is over.” I was about to stand up when the door suddenly burst open and the lawyer my grandmother had put in charge of my case, Mr. Drake, walked in looking like a wounded lion. “Do you think you already owns your grandmother's company?”
