Chapter 4: The Warning She Ignored

823 Words
Vanessa woke to the soft rise and fall of Mark’s breathing beside her. The quiet of the morning wrapped around them, warm and still, settling over her like a soft blanket. For a long moment, she simply stayed there still, quiet, wrapped in a fleeting sense of peace she hadn’t felt in a long while. It had been four weeks since that night in the restaurant. Four weeks of stolen kisses, lingering touches, late-night conversations, deep romance, and passion that came too easily. They were not officially a couple not yet but they were something. Something warm. Something familiar. Something dangerously close to everything she once lost. He murmured her name in his sleep. Her heartbeat jumped, sudden and sharp. She shouldn’t feel this happy… but she did. Vanessa slipped out of bed and went to the bathroom to wash her face. Behind her, she could hear him shifting, waking slowly. By the time she stepped back into the room, Mark was leaning on one elbow, watching her with an easy smile. “Morning, beautiful,” he said. She rolled her eyes, but her lips curved. “You’re not supposed to say flattering things before I’ve brushed my teeth.” “Too late. I’ve already said them in my head.” She laughed, shaking her head as she reached for her robe. The last month had been good sweet, even. But woven through the sweetness were small threads she had chosen not to tug at. Not yet. Two weeks ago, he’d asked if she could help him cover a “small unexpected bill.” She hadn’t thought much of it. A week later, something about a “delayed payment” from one of his clients. Then yesterday, he casually mentioned needing “just a little support” to get through a tough patch. She’d helped, each time. Her restaurant was thriving more than ever after the regional food magazine featured her in their “Hidden Culinary Gems” column. Customers now lined up consistently; online deliveries exploded; and a well-known spice company emailed her last week about a potential partnership. She was proud. Truly proud. Maybe because she felt so secure, she didn’t want to imagine anything off about Mark’s requests. Maybe she wanted to believe love could return clean, without cracks. *** Later that afternoon, Vanessa arrived at the restaurant just as her staff, Elena, was organizing the front counter. “Good afternoon, ma’am!” Elena chirped. Vanessa grinned. “Afternoon, Elena. How’s the prep going?” “We’re ready for evening rush. Oh someone dropped this off for you.” She handed Vanessa a neatly sealed envelope. Vanessa frowned, opening it quickly. Inside was a sleek invitation card embossed in gold: “Culinary Rising Stars Award Night Honoring New Leaders in European Cuisine.” Her name was listed under the Chef of the Year Nominees. Vanessa’s heart fluttered. She covered her mouth with her palm, stunned. “Oh my God…” Elena squealed. “Ma’am, are you crying?” “No,” Vanessa laughed, blinking fast. “I am… but don’t tell anyone.” She stepped into her office to breathe. Her brand was growing faster than she imagined. Her father would have been proud. Maybe even her mother, though she never said so out loud. Her phone buzzed. A message from Mark. “Thinking about you. Dinner tonight?” She smiled instinctively. “Sure. After closing?” she replied. He sent a heart emoji. *** Later that evening, after a packed dinner rush, Vanessa stayed behind to count the day’s revenue. A stack of receipts sat on her table food suppliers, repairs, deliveries, everything in its place. Except one. A cream-colored slip poked out from between her invoices. It looked like a receipt, but the logo wasn’t familiar. She pulled it free. A boutique receipt. One of the most expensive men’s stores in the city. TOTAL: $2000 PAID BY: Mark PAYMENT TYPE: e-Transfer SENDER: Vanessa E. Vanessa blinked. Her name. Her account. Her money. Her brows furrowed. She had never transferred anything that large not in the last month. The highest had been $1000 to help him “cover a shortfall.” Her skin prickled. Why would he Her phone buzzed. Mark: “Outside. Want me to come in?” She stared at the message, the receipt still between her fingers. Her stomach curled. This wasn’t just a financial favor. This was something else. Something she didn’t understand yet. And something was telling her that she wasn’t supposed to find that receipt. Her fingers tightened around the slip. Her heart beat louder. She forced herself to take a slow breath, smoothing her face before stepping out of her office. Mark stood by the entrance, smiling at her like nothing in the world was wrong. “Ready?” he asked gently. Vanessa nodded. But inside her chest, something shifted. A small, silent warning. Something wasn’t right… and she finally felt it.
