Dark clouds were rolling in the sky, and the raindrops were getting more and more intensive. Mia stood on the side of the road in a daze. A taxi passed by her and honked. She calmed down, walked over, and got on the car.
After Mia gave the address, the driver had been peeking at her in the rearview mirror: it was getting late, a pretty girl was on the street alone with her face being slapped, and her eyes crying to red. It was hard to imagine what she had gone through.
Getting out of the taxi, Mia took a deep breath and felt glad that she did not meet Mrs. Li downstairs. She hurried upstairs and hid in her room.
After taking a hot bath and changing into pajamas, Mia lay on the bed. She just felt the buzz in her head. She seemed to fall into the dark abyss in the daze. No one helped her. She fell deeper and deeper. There was still a shadow chasing her and making lewd laughter, which was creepy.
When Mia was awakened, it was raining outside. A sudden flash of lightning lit up the room, and the shadow cast by the basket on the window just fell on the bedsheet, like a behemoth. The nightmare replayed in her mind. Mia was so scared that she opened the door and ran out barefoot.
The light in the corridor made her feel safe for a moment. Alfred, who was still working in the study, heard the sound and came out. He saw her barefoot in her pink pajamas, knees in her hands, crouching against the door in an extremely insecure position.
"What's wrong with you?" He walked up to her.
Mia looked up at him. The man in the white shirt stood in front of her like a savior. Without hesitation, she got up and hugged him tightly, with her arms around his waist.
"Let me have a hug for a moment, just for a moment!" She said with a heavy twang, which made him unable to refuse her.
Alfred lowered his head. The girl in front of him was only as tall as his shoulder. Although her strength was very small, she held him very tightly, and her whole body was attached to him.
"Did you have a nightmare?" He asked in a low voice, seeing the sweat on her smooth forehead.
Mia still held him tightly without a word.
Alfred led her into the study, which was lit with orange lights. Mia sat on the couch with her head down.
"If you're scared, you can have a rest on the sofa." Alfred looked at her and said. There was still a stack of papers at his desk.
Mia nodded, covered her body with a wool blanket, turned her back to him, and lay down.
Now she only felt that her head was heavy and her mind was in a mess. She stopped thinking, only to know that she was very tired, too tired to open her eyes.
Alfred sat in front of the desk and heard her steady breathing. He gentled his action of paging the documents. After reading a few pages, he got up to the window and lit a cigarette. He stared at the little figure on the sofa, then put out the cigarette, and walked over.
Mia curled up on the sofa and did not sleep well. Her delicate eyebrows were tightly knitted.
Alfred gently pushed aside the black hair that covered her face, revealing her swollen cheek. There were several clear fingerprints on her fair face.
He was right!
When she woke up the next day, Mia found that she was lying on her bed. It was sunny outside the window. She vaguely remembered that she was sleeping in Alfred's study room yesterday, but she had no idea how she returned to her room.
It was already ten o'clock in the morning. She got up and went out of bed, only felt weak. She must have a fever because she got soaked in the rain yesterday.
