The words had barely left my mouth before I knew exactly how badly they had landed.
‘He's my Mate.’
One second of complete silence swallowed the holding cell. I watched Elias's face, that was my first mistake.
He looked shocked, and it was so obvious anyone would've notice. But the expression didn't last long, it disappeared so completely I almost convinced myself I'd imagined it. What replaced it was something I recognized from a long time ago, something I hadn't expected to see again.
His gaze dropped immediately to my neck. Of course that was the first thing he would check.
He looked for several seconds, long enough that every human in the room understood what he was looking for. Long enough that the Beta beside him let out a short exhale, like he'd already made up his mind.
