WREN The next morning, I searched for her before I did anything else. Not that I could anyway with how devastated my mind was. The moment the cell doors opened, my eyes scanned every face spilling into the corridor as the rest of the prisoners shuffled past in silence, some rubbing sleep from their eyes while others stared blankly ahead, too exhausted to care where they were being taken. She wasn't among them as I looked and immediately I could feel a knot tightened in my stomach. ‘Maybe she'd been moved.’ The thought hit my mind. ‘Maybe she'd been assigned somewhere else.’ Or maybe...I pushed the thought away before it could sit too comfortably in my mind.
