TWELVE “You’ll be happy about how it went,” Donny says as they return to Alex’s office. “It was okay, but seeing his reaction to what I presented, I must say I’ve still got doubts about how culpable McCourt is; I just have this nagging feeling.” “All the evidence points in one direction,” Donny says. “I don’t disagree, but it doesn’t make me any more comfortable.” “Is that why you didn’t insist on charging him and keeping him in custody?” Donny asks. “To some degree, yes, but I did it more out of pragmatism. If we’d charged him, we’d only have had until he appeared in court on Monday to come up with enough evidence to make sure the charge would stick.
