The Network

Lyra’s Pov ‎ ‎Sera gives us seven names, and every single one of them is someone Theron trusted. ‎ ‎Sera sat up in the hospital bed, she still looked fragile but stronger than she had been. The healer standing near the door had a vial of something ready, some medicine to help her sleep, but Sera shook her head at it. She did not want to sleep. She asked for paper and pen instead. ‎ ‎Nobody argued with her. Damon found a notepad on the side table and handed it over without a word. ‎ ‎Her hands shook as she wrote. I could see the effort it took her. But her eyes never wavered. She knew exactly what she was writing. She did not pause to think or second-guess a single name. When she finished she tore the page free and held it out to Theron. ‎ ‎I watched his face as he read it. His expression did not change, which was worse than anger. Anger would have meant he was reacting. Stillness meant he was containing something too large to let out. His jaw tightened just a fraction. That was all. ‎ ‎I leaned over his shoulder and read the names. Two of them I recognized from pack Council meetings I had attended as Luna. One name stopped us both cold: Elder Casimir. Theron's senior advisor for eleven years. The man who had welcomed me to the pack on my first day. The man who sat across from me at meetings and smiled like a kind grandfather. ‎ ‎Theron folded the paper once, carefully, like controlling the paper helped him control himself. Damon reached for the list, reading through it without speaking. By the time he reached the bottom his face had gone very still as well. ‎ ‎The emergency meeting was just the four of us: Theron, me, Damon, and Sera. No one else could know. The information could not travel. Theron's instinct was immediate. "Arrest everyone on the list tonight." ‎ ‎Damon looked up from the paper. "If we pull in seven connected people at the same time, every other person attached to this network will know within the hour. They will be gone before morning." ‎ ‎I nodded. "We cannot arrest them yet. We have to use them. Let them believe they are still safe, still hidden. That is the only way to find everyone else." ‎ ‎Theron's fury was visible in the set of his jaw, but his logic accepted it. The plan was formed. We would feed false information through Elder Casimir using a routine Council communication, something ordinary that would not raise suspicion. Then we would watch where that information went and use the movement to map every connection in the network. Let the conspiracy's own structure show us how far it reached. ‎ ‎My Oracle gift confirmed Sera's list. When I focused on each one I could see it clearly, blood on their hands, choices made in dark rooms, loyalty that had been sold a long time ago. Every name Sera wrote was accurate. I told Theron and he absorbed that without comment. ‎ ‎Sera had been watching us work through the plan from her bed. She spoke up quietly when there was a gap in the conversation. "There is an eighth name. One I did not write down." ‎ ‎Everyone looked at her. ‎ ‎"I did not write it because I only heard it once and I am not certain. But the night Magnus came to see me, before everything happened, he said something. He mentioned someone above him." She paused. "He called them the Architect." ‎ ‎The new information changed everything. If Magnus was taking orders, the network went higher than anyone suspected. Damon immediately asked, "Who is above Magnus? Magnus was Continental Council Head Elder." "There is no one above that position." ‎ ‎Sera shook her head. "I do not know who it is. He said the name once and then stopped talking, like he realized he had said too much. But it was the way his voice changed when he said it that I remembered. Magnus was not scared of anything. I had never once heard fear in his voice." She looked at Theron. "He was afraid." ‎ ‎Magnus had been one of the most powerful figures in the continental pack structure. Whatever the Architect was, it sat above even him ‎ ‎Theron stood quietly for a moment, working through it. Then he shifted. The original goal had been to dismantle the network. But dismantling the network meant nothing if the person controlling it was still free and still hidden. ‎ ‎The goal changed. We would use the seven names to find the Architect. That was the target now. ‎ ‎Everything moved quickly after that. Damon left to deploy surveillance teams around six of the names on the list. Casimir would be handled separately, carefully. A routine Council communication went out through normal channels, carrying information that was false but convincing, detailed enough to be believed. The bait was set. ‎ ‎I moved through the compound quietly for the rest of the day, using my Oracle gift to watch for reactions, looking for any shift in behaviour among the pack. Anything that felt off. Damon's teams were in place. Nobody raised an alarm. On the surface everything looked exactly as it always had. ‎ ‎Late that night, Theron and I were alone in our rooms. He sat at the window, the folded list on the table beside him. I sat beside him without speaking first, letting him have the silence. His shoulders were tense. The bond between us felt heavy with everything he was not saying. ‎ ‎Theron finally spoke. "Casimir held my father's sword at the funeral. I was nineteen years old. "He stood next to me at the grave and told me my father would be proud of how I handled the coup." ‎ ‎I put my hand over his where it rested on the windowsill. His skin was warm but his fingers were rigid. ‎ ‎Theron continued, voice low. "How many of the people I trusted were watching me the whole time?" ‎ ‎I squeezed his hand. "I do not know. But I know one thing that is not a lie." ‎ ‎He turned to look at me. ‎ ‎"Us," I said. "Whatever else was engineered or manipulated or placed there on purpose, this is real. What is between us is real." ‎ ‎His hand turned over to grip mine. No more words needed. Just that. ‎ ‎Three hours before dawn, Damon knocked urgently. Surveillance teams were reporting back. The false information fed to Casimir had moved. Within two hours it had reached three people, exactly the kind of spread they expected to see. The bait was working. But that was not the urgent news. ‎ ‎Three of the seven names on Sera's list had gone completely dark. Phones disconnected, homes empty, families claiming they left suddenly for travel. Three people had vanished, and the timing of it was what mattered. They disappeared within hours of Casimir receiving the false information. Not after. Before. ‎ ‎Which meant Casimir had not warned them. They were already gone before the bait reached him. ‎Someone had warned them before we even set the trap. ‎ ‎I stood in the middle of the room. Only four people had known the plan. Only four people had been in that room with Sera when we decided what to do and how to do it. ‎ ‎"Three conspirators vanished before we even laid the trap, which meant someone in that room with us, someone who heard us plan, someone close enough to touch, had already made a call we would never be able to trace. There was a leak standing right beside us, and I had no idea which face to stop trusting."
