Continental Council

‎Lyra’s Pov ‎ ‎ ‎The Continental Council Hall is beautiful and ancient and reeks of political violence. ‎ ‎We arrived with our delegation, the Northern Territory showing its strength the moment our convoy pulled up outside. Massive stone walls rose around us, carved with old symbols of wolf packs and alliances that had been broken as often as they were made. Alphas from all seven major territories were already gathered, along with their Lunas, Council Elders, and the political figures who actually ran things. Theron walked beside me with his hand firm at my lower back. Damon and our elite guards stayed close, their eyes constantly moving, scanning every face. ‎ ‎Other Alphas greeted Theron with a mix of respect and wariness, nodding to him while keeping a careful distance. Garrett Stone from the Western Territory caught sight of me and smirked, his eyes flicking over me with open amusement. "Brought your pretty Luna," he said. "Brave." ‎ ‎Theron's growl was low and warning. I felt the tension in his body through the bond. Elena was there too, representing her family. Our eyes met across the hall. Her expression was complicated, something between respect and worry. Then my gaze landed on Magnus Thornfield and everything in me went still. He presided as Head Elder, looking at me with a cold assessment. My Oracle sense screamed danger the moment our eyes connected, a sharp pulse of warning that twisted my stomach. ‎ ‎Magnus spoke, his voice carrying across the hall. "Alpha Blackridge. And the new Luna. How... unexpected to see her here." ‎ ‎Theron’s hand pressed harder against my back. "My mate accompanies me to all official functions." ‎ ‎The subtext was clear. Magnus had not expected me to survive the bounty. Theron was claiming me publicly, making it harder for anyone to move against me. ‎ ‎The formal Council session began. I sat beside Theron while other Lunas were directed to the observer section. Magnus tried to separate us. "Luna Lyra, you are not familiar with Council protocol. Perhaps you should join the other mates?" ‎ ‎I kept my voice calm. "I am familiar enough to know that Lunas of major territories are permitted to sit with their Alphas during full sessions. Northern Territory is the largest pack represented here today. I stay." ‎ ‎It was a small power play, but I won. Magnus's irritation showed in the tightness around his eyes. The session moved on to territory disputes and trade agreements, speeches droning for what felt like hours while deals were negotiated. I tried to focus, but small visions kept flashing. Flashes of Magnus meeting with conspirators. Planning an attack. I stayed still, not letting it show. ‎ ‎One vision hit harder during a break in the discussion, clear enough that it nearly knocked the breath out of me. The attack comes tonight. During the reception banquet. Assassins were already in the building. I gasped slightly. Theron was instantly alert, his hand squeezing mine. ‎ ‎I leaned close and whispered, "Tonight. It is tonight." ‎ ‎He understood. ‎ ‎During the session break, Theron requested an emergency private Council meeting, Just the Alphas and Head Elders behind closed doors. He laid out the evidence carefully. Helena's confession. The financial trails Damon had traced. Magnus's involvement in decades of Oracle murders. ‎ ‎Magnus performed the shock perfectly. "This is absurd. "The word of a desperate woman trying to save her own life from execution? You expect this Council to act on that?" ‎ ‎Several of the other Alphas looked uncertain, glancing between Theron and Magnus. Magnus was respected, ancient, trusted by most of the people in that room for longer than I had been alive. But then Garrett, surprisingly, spoke up in support of Theron. "I have had suspicions about Elder Magnus for years," he said. "It is remarkably convenient how his rivals tend to disappear over time." ‎ ‎More voices followed after that. People offering stories of mysterious deaths and patterns that had never quite been explained. But none of it was concrete. Magnus held his ground, maintaining his innocence with the calm of a man who had survived far worse accusations before. "Where is your proof beyond hearsay and old grudges?" ‎ ‎Theron’s voice stayed controlled. "My mate is Oracle-born. She has seen your crimes." ‎ ‎Magnus laughed. "Oracle visions? Ancient superstition dressed up as evidence. You're grasping at straws, Blackridge." ‎ ‎The room fell into a tense stalemate. No concrete proof, only circumstantial evidence and accusations that could not be fully proven in front of a formal Council. Magnus, sensing the room was not fully against him, called for a vote. "Should I step down pending a formal investigation?" ‎ ‎The vote split badly. Some supported Magnus, some sided with Theron, some stayed undecided. Magnus retained his position but was now under scrutiny. I felt the danger in the room rising even as the meeting ended. A cornered animal was always the most dangerous, and Magnus had just been cornered in front of his peers. ‎ ‎We prepared for the evening banquet knowing exactly what was coming, unable to cancel without alerting Magnus that we knew. Damon coordinated security, positioning guards and planning escape routes. Theron armed himself with hidden weapons and gave me a concealed blade. "You stay at my side. No matter what." ‎ ‎"I will," I said. ‎ ‎My visions intensified. Fragments of multiple attackers, poison, chaos breaking out in different directions at once. The future stayed fluid, hard to see clearly. I told Theron everything I saw. We adjusted the plan as best we could. ‎ ‎Before entering the banquet, Theron pulled me close in a side hallway. He kissed me deeply, his hands framing my face. "If something happens to me—" ‎ ‎"Nothing will," I cut in. ‎ ‎He rested his forehead against mine. "But if it does, you run. You survive. Promise me." ‎ ‎I could not promise. I would not. ‎ ‎We entered the grand hall together. Hundreds of wolves filled the space. Food and wine flowed. Music played. Dancing started. On the surface it looked like celebration and diplomacy. Underneath, predators circled. My Oracle sense screamed danger from every direction. Magnus watched me from across the room. ‎ ‎Garrett approached and asked me to dance, a political courtesy. Theron was reluctant but could not refuse without causing a scene. I stepped onto the dance floor with Garrett. ‎ ‎"You are very brave, little Oracle," Garrett said quietly as we moved. "Or very stupid." ‎ ‎"Which do you think?" I asked. ‎ ‎"Brave. But bravery gets you killed just as often as stupidity does." ‎ ‎"Magnus is not the only one who wants you dead, you know. An Oracle bloodline threatens everyone in this room who profits from chaos. That is a longer list than you might think." ‎ ‎"Are you threatening me?" ‎ ‎"Warning you. There is a difference." ‎ ‎The dance ended. I returned to Theron. ‎ ‎"What did he say?" Theron asked. ‎ ‎"That we have more enemies than we thought." ‎ ‎Theron’s expression turned grim. "I know." ‎ ‎The server approached with wine. My Oracle vision exploded: poison in the glass, assassins in the shadows, Magnus smiled as he watched us, waiting to see us drink. I had seconds to decide who to save and who to let die.
