The Watcher

‎‎Lyra's Pov ‎ ‎ ‎He's standing in my doorway like a ghost, and I don't know how long he's been there. ‎ ‎I sat up fast in bed, heart slamming against my ribs. The nightmare is still all over me, blood and fire and a younger Theron standing over bodies. My breathing came quick and shallow. I pressed a hand to my chest and blinked at the doorway. He filled it completely, dim hallway light behind him, face mostly in shadow. I could not see his expression clearly, but I felt his presence like a weight on my chest. ‎ ‎"How long have you been standing there?" My voice came out hoarse. ‎ ‎Theron's rough voice cut through the dark. "You were screaming." ‎ ‎Realization hit me. The nightmare must have been loud enough to wake him. I pulled the blanket higher, suddenly aware of how thin my nightclothes were. "I'm fine. You can go." ‎ ‎He did not move. "You dreamed of fire. Death. You saw what I did." ‎ ‎I blinked, confused. "It was just a nightmare." ‎ ‎Theron stayed silent for a long moment. Then he spoke again, voice low and heavy. "The bond. When it is strong enough, mates can share dreams. Emotions." ‎ ‎The words hung between us. He just admitted the mate bond was real. My hands tightened on the blanket. "You said there was no bond." ‎ ‎Theron's bitter laugh was short and broken. "I lied." ‎ ‎He stepped into the room and closed the door behind him. The click sounded too loud in the quiet. I watched him lean against the door like he needed support. My heart would not slow down. This was the most real he had been since the forest. ‎ ‎"I did not know who you were that night," he said, voice rough. "Just a scent in the darkness. A woman in heat, desperate and broken. I should have walked away." ‎ ‎I swallowed hard. "Why didn't you?" ‎ ‎His eyes found mine in the low light. "Because my wolf recognized something of mine. I had been searching for my mate for ten years. Ten years of nothing. Then one scent and I knew. But I could not see your face. You could not see mine. When I woke, you were gone." ‎ ‎The pain in his voice made my chest ache. "I was right there. In Crescent Hollow. Twenty miles from where we met." ‎ ‎"A minor pack I had never dealt with," he said. "By the time I expanded the search there, your father had already contacted me about the contract." ‎ ‎The coincidence felt too big. Fate pulled us back together in the worst way. Theron kept talking, the words coming faster now. "I walked into that meeting and your scent hit me before I saw your face. I knew immediately. My mate. The woman I had been destroying myself searching for." ‎ ‎My throat felt tight. "Then why pretend? Why the contract? Why not just claim me?" ‎ ‎Theron's face twisted with raw emotion. "Because you deserve better than a monster." ‎ ‎He stayed by the door, but I could see the fight in him. The way his shoulders tensed. The way his hands clenched at his sides. "I am the Beast of the North. I have killed hundreds. Destroyed packs. I am brutal and cold and everything soft dies around me." ‎ ‎He took a shaky breath. "My family was slaughtered because I was not strong enough to protect them. Every person I have allowed myself to care about, I have lost. Every single one." ‎ ‎His words broke something in me. I saw the weight he carried. The self-hatred. "You're light and goodness and healing and everything I am not," he continued, voice cracking. "I marked you in darkness like an animal. You deserve a real choice." ‎ ‎So this was not about me. It was about him thinking he was poisonous. I felt anger rise alongside the hurt. "So the contract is what? Penance? A way to keep me close enough to protect but far enough away that you feel less guilty?" ‎ ‎Theron looked at me like I had struck him. "It is a way to give you security without destroying you with what I am." ‎ ‎My temper flared. "You do not get to decide what destroys me. "I have been rejected by my own pack. Humiliated in front of everyone I grew up with. Marked in the dark and then abandoned and then looked through like I was nothing at a contract table. You think keeping your distance protects me?" My voice cracked on the last part. "It is not protection. It is torture." ‎ ‎The air between us felt charged. Theron crossed the room in two strides and sat on the edge of my bed. He reached for my face, then stopped himself, hand hovering. "If I touch you, I will not stop." ‎ ‎"Then don't stop." ‎ ‎ "Lyra..." ‎ ‎I did not think. I reached up and covered his hand with mine and brought it to my cheek. The contact was electric. So completely right and overwhelming. His skin was warm against mine. His red-gold eyes burned brighter, wolf close to the surface. He leaned in, breath mixing with mine. So close. The pull between us felt unstoppable. ‎ ‎Then he jerked back like I had burned him. He stood up fast, putting distance between us again. "The ceremony is in two days. After that, you will be Luna. Protected. Safe. That is all that matters." ‎ ‎I stood too, voice shaking. "What about what I want?" ‎ ‎Theron was already at the door. "You want a mate who can love you without breaking you. I cannot be that." ‎ ‎He left without another word. The door closed softly behind him. I stood alone in the room, shaking. Tears burned my eyes. He was not rejecting me because he did not want me. He was pushing me away because he genuinely believed he was poison. ‎ ‎He thought he was protecting me by staying away. He did not realize that loving a broken man was not what would destroy me. Watching him refuse to let himself be loved was.
