Lyra’s Pov
I wake up in Theron's bed, in his arms, and the mark on my neck is glowing.
Warmth surrounded me. Strong arms held me close against a solid chest. For a moment I stayed still, afraid to move in case it was another dream. But the steady heartbeat under my ear was real. The scent of pine and smoke and him filled my nose. I opened my eyes slowly.
The mark on my neck pulsed with a faint silver-gold light. It was glowing. I had never seen anything like it. My fingers brushed over it carefully. The light brightened slightly with my touch, sending a warm ripple through my body. I looked down. Theron's mark on his shoulder was glowing too, the same soft light pulsing in time with mine.
Theron stirred behind me. His arms tightened for a second, then his eyes opened. He saw the glow and went very still. His breath caught.
"Is this normal?" I whispered, voice rough from sleep.
His hand moved to my neck, thumb tracing the glowing mark with something like awe. "It is the mate bond. Fully activated. When both partners accept it completely, the marks synchronize."
He touched his own mark. The glow brightened under his fingers. "We are fully bonded now. No going back."
My heart skipped. "Do you want to go back?"
Theron pulled me closer, burying his face in my hair. "Never."
The word settled deep inside me. I turned in his arms so I could see his face. His red-gold eyes were softer than I had ever seen them. No ice. No walls. Just him, looking at me like I was something precious he had finally allowed himself to hold. I reached up and traced his jaw. He leaned into the touch, eyes closing for a moment.
We stayed like that for a long time, just holding each other in the quiet morning light. No rush. No pretending. For the first time, it felt real.
Eventually we got up. Theron pulled on pants and handed me one of his shirts. It was too big, falling to my thighs, but it smelled like him. We went to his private kitchen. He moved around the space with surprising ease, pulling out ingredients for breakfast. I watched him crack eggs into a pan, the simple domestic action feeling huge after everything.
"You cook?" I asked, leaning against the counter.
A small, genuine smile touched his lips. "I learned. After my family... I needed things I could control. Food was one of them."
I stepped closer and helped chop vegetables. Our shoulders brushed. Every small touch sent warmth through me. We worked side by side, talking quietly about nothing important. The weather. A training session he had planned. How I liked my eggs. It was so normal it made my chest ache in the best way. This was the man he had been before tragedy broke him. Lighter. Gentler. I caught him watching me with wonder when he thought I was not looking.
"How are you real?" he asked suddenly, voice low.
I turned to him. "I have been here the whole time."
"I know," he said. "I am sorry I made you wait."
The apology was genuine. No deflection. No walls. I stepped into his space and kissed him softly. He kissed me back, hands gentle on my waist. Breakfast almost burned, but neither of us cared.
We sat at the small table to eat. The conversation turned out to be honest. About the forest. About his search. About the contract.
"I saw you at that meeting and knew I could not let you go," he said quietly. "The contract was an excuse to keep you close while I figured out how not to destroy you."
"You could never destroy me," I replied. "You are what saved me."
His hand found mine across the table. We stayed like that for a while, just holding on.
Reality intruded too soon. A sharp knock sounded at the door. Damon's voice came through. "Alpha, pack emergency. Border scouts reported movement from the west."
Theron sighed, reluctant to leave our little bubble. He pulled me in for one last long kiss before getting dressed. "Do not disappear."
"I will be here when you get back," I promised.
Something shifted in his expression. Relief. Like he had needed to hear that. He left for the emergency, and I stayed in his room alone for the first time.
I looked around properly. The space was him. Books on strategy and history mixed with weapons carefully displayed. A few photos on a shelf caught my eye. His family. A beautiful woman who must have been his mother. A strong man, his father. A young girl with bright eyes, his sister. I touched the frame gently. This was the loss he carried. The reason for the walls.
I understood him better now. The violence. The distance. The fear of loving again. But he had let me in. At least a little.
I headed to my Luna office later, still carrying the warmth of the morning. Pack members noticed something different about me. The glowing marks were visible to wolf senses. Whispers followed me. "They bonded for real." "Not just a contract anymore." "Luna is his true mate."
The reactions were mixed. Some wolves looked happy. Others are concerned. Elena watched from across the hall, her expression upset. Elder Cassius intercepted me near my office. "I hope you know what you are doing, Luna. Alpha does not love lightly. Nor does he handle loss well."
It was both a warning and a threat. "I am not going anywhere," I said firmly.
"People always say that," Cassius replied. "And then they die."
His words about Theron's family were cruel but true. I was shaken, but I refused to show it. I went into my office and tried to focus on pack business. A mysterious note slipped under the door caught my eye. No signature. Careful block handwriting.
"The Alpha's mate has a target on her back. His enemies will use you to break him. Watch the shadows."
A chill ran down my spine. Someone was threatening me. I did not know who or how credible it was. I took the note to Damon while Theron was still in his emergency meeting.
Damon's face grew serious. "This is serious. Someone knows you are his real mate now, not just a contract."
He arranged increased security and promised to tell Theron when he was free. I asked him to wait. "Do not tell him yet. He just finally let himself be happy. One day without a crisis."
Damon agreed reluctantly.
I wanted one perfect day with him before the threats became real. I did not know that in the shadows of the estate, someone was already planning how to use me to destroy the man I loved.
