Lyra's Pov
The pack thinks I'm a fortune hunter who trapped their Alpha, and I can't tell them the truth without sounding insane.
Margaret woke me before the sun was fully up. Her knock was sharp and impatient. "Your schedule starts at six, Luna. Breakfast is waiting." I pulled myself out of bed, eyes still heavy, and got dressed quickly. The breakfast room was empty again. Theron had already left for pack business. I sat alone at the long table while staff moved quietly around me, bringing food I barely touched. Every bite felt like it stuck in my throat. This was my new normal. Eating alone. Sleeping alone. Living in a place that still felt like it belonged to someone else.
Celeste was waiting right after breakfast. She took me straight to a meeting with the Council of Elders. Five older wolves sat around a heavy wooden table, watching me with cold eyes. None of them smiled. None of them offered any warmth. They looked at me like I was a problem to solve.
The one named Cassius spoke first. His voice was sharp. "A marked, disgraced wolf from a minor pack. What exactly qualifies you for the Luna title?"
His words hit hard. I felt heat rise in my cheeks, but I forced my shoulders back. "I did not seek this position. Your Alpha chose me."
Cassius leaned forward, eyes narrowed. "For political convenience. Do not mistake that for value."
The other elders asked question after question. About my background. My education. My skills as a healer. I answered as best I could, but every reply felt like it was being weighed and found wanting. One elder was more diplomatic, but even he looked skeptical. I realized then that nothing would be handed to me here. I would have to fight for every bit of respect in this territory. The thought made my stomach twist, but it also lit a small fire in my chest. I was tired of being looked down on.
The meeting dragged on until I felt raw inside. When it finally ended, I stepped out of the room feeling drained. Damon was waiting in the hallway like he knew I would need rescuing. "Rough morning?" he asked with a half-smile. "Come on. Let me show you the territory properly."
We walked for hours through the pack lands. Damon pointed out schools full of children training, businesses running smoothly, and large training grounds where warriors practiced. "We are not like most packs," he explained. "Theron values merit over birth. Strength over status. Wolves from any rank can rise if they prove themselves."
I watched a group of mixed ranks working together. It was different from Crescent Hollow, where bloodlines mattered more than anything.
“He rebuilt this pack from blood and ashes. Everything here, he created.”
"What was he like?" I asked quietly. "Before he became Alpha?"
Damon grew serious. He looked out at the training fields for a long moment. "Lighter. He used to laugh. Then his family was slaughtered in a coup attempt. He had to become something harder to survive."
The words sank deep. My maybe-mate carried heavy scars from a young age. The image of a younger Theron losing everything made something ache in my chest. I wanted to ask more, but I held back. Damon was already giving me more than I expected.
We passed another training ground where warriors were sparring hard. One huge male stopped and stared straight at me. "So you are the marked bride," he called out loud enough for everyone nearby to hear. "Bet the rogue who had you first did not think you would end up here."
The insult was clear. Several warriors stopped to watch. Damon stepped forward, but I held up my hand. Anger rose hot in my throat. I looked the warrior in the eyes. "The mark makes me no less Luna. Disrespect it again and find out if your Alpha values you more than his contract."
My voice came out stronger than I felt. The warrior stared at me, surprised. After a tense moment, he backed down with a small nod. Damon grinned beside me. "Maybe you will survive here after all."
The small victory felt good, but it left me tired. I was already fighting battles I never asked for.
Later that afternoon, an elegant she-wolf approached us during the tour. She moved with perfect confidence. Beautiful, poised, everything I was not. "Elena Ashford," she said with a sweet smile. "Welcome to the territory."
Damon gave me a quick warning glance. This was political.
Elena kept smiling. "I knew Theron was seeking a contract bride, but I must admit, you are not what anyone expected."
"So I have been told," I replied, keeping my voice even.
She probed carefully. "How did you two meet? The announcement was so sudden."
"Through political channels. Arrangement between packs."
"Of course," Elena said smoothly. "Theron has always been strategic. We almost had an arrangement ourselves once."
The words landed like a quiet threat. She was letting me know she had history with him. That he had refused her. "I do hope you understand the position you are in," she added. "Contract marriages are so… temporary. Easy to dissolve when they have served their purpose."
I felt the challenge. She wanted Theron. I was just an obstacle. Something inside me pushed back. "Good thing I do not plan to make it easy."
Elena's smile sharpened. "I am so glad. I do enjoy a challenge."
She walked away gracefully, but her words stayed with me like a warning.
Celeste resumed my Luna training in the late afternoon. We focused on pack mediation and handling disputes. She gave me different scenarios and made me solve them out loud. I used what I learned from my time helping in the healer's den, focusing on calming situations and finding fair solutions. Celeste watched closely. "You have instincts for this. Unexpected."
She even noticed how some aggressive wolves in the practice scenarios seemed to settle when I spoke. "That is rare. Do not waste it."
For the first time since arriving, I felt like I might actually be good at something here. The small spark of confidence helped push back against the fear.
Dinner that evening was alone again. Theron was busy somewhere else. I sat in my room afterward, staring at the walls and trying to process the long day. The Northern Territory was huge, complex, and intimidating. I was in over my head. But I was also determined not to drown. I had survived rejection. I had survived the forest. I would survive this too.
I touched the mark on my neck and whispered into the quiet room. "If you are hiding because you think I cannot handle this, you are wrong. If you are hiding because you are afraid, join the club."
No response came. Just the familiar burning under my skin.
I fell asleep exhausted, my mind full of new faces, new rules, and the constant mystery of the man I was bound to.
I dreamed of blood and fire, of a young Theron standing over bodies, and when I woke up gasping, I found him standing at my door, watching me sleep with an expression that looked like grief.
