The Claiming

Lyra's Pov ‎Two weeks before the Blood Moon, Theron asked me something I was not prepared for. ‎ ‎The morning after I made my private decision about the vision, I went to the garden before anyone else was up. The herb beds I planted when I first arrived as Luna, back when everything about this place still felt foreign and cold, were flourishing in a way that surprised me. I sat on the stone bench, running my fingers through the leaves, trying to calm the thoughts racing in my head. The vision of Theron standing alone in the ceremony circle kept replaying. I had not told him yet. I was still deciding if I should. ‎ ‎Footsteps approached. Theron. He sat beside me without preamble, his shoulder brushing mine. For a moment we just sat in silence, the bond humming quietly between us. ‎ ‎"I want to claim you properly," he said suddenly. ‎ ‎I turned to look at him. "We are marked. We are bonded." ‎ ‎"We are marked," he agreed. "We had a contract ceremony, signed under pressure, witnessed by people who cared more about the politics of it than about either of us. We bonded under crisis and fear and incomplete information, neither of us really understanding what we were choosing at the time." He paused, his eyes steady on mine. "I want to claim you when we are actually choosing it. Fully. In front of the pack. Not the contract. Not the forest in the dark where neither of us could even see the other's face. Something real, chosen with both of us standing in the light." ‎ ‎I studied his face. His red-gold eyes were steady, but I felt the weight behind them through the bond. "Why now?" ‎ ‎ ‎"Because in two weeks we walk into something that might change everything about who we are," he said. "And before that happens, I want there to be one moment that belongs only to us. Not about prophecy. Not about the Convergence or the old families or any of it. Just us, choosing each other. ‎ ‎The words settled warm in my chest. "Yes," I said, not needing to think about it at all. ‎ ‎ Surprise flickering across his face. "That was fast." ‎ ‎"I have been waiting for you to ask since the first real dinner we had," I said softly. ‎ ‎The ceremony was small. I wanted it that way. Not the formal Continental event with hundreds of eyes watching. Just family and inner circle, the people who had actually earned a place in this part of our lives. Sera was well enough to attend, which mattered more than anything else on the guest list. Damon kept saying he would not cry. Sera teased him relentlessly. "You will absolutely cry." Damon insisted he would not. Calla insisted on attending too, despite every piece of medical advice telling her to stay in bed, conducting herself from a chair someone had carried out into the garden for her. She had one condition before she would agree to come. "Let me speak first," she said. "There is something the pack should hear before the ceremony begins." ‎ ‎Calla addressed the assembled group as the sun went down. Her voice carried clearly. She spoke of what Oracles actually were. What this bond actually meant. Not prophecy language. Real language. "This woman is the source of something your pack has not had in three hundred years. And this man chose her before he knew that. That is the part that matters. Everything else is just the consequence that follows from this one choice." ‎ ‎The ceremony began as the sun dipped low. No officiant. No formal structure. No Continental protocol. Theron and I faced each other in the estate gardens. The pack gathered in a loose circle around us, firelight flickering on their faces. ‎ ‎Theron spoke first, no prepared words. "I found you in the dark and I was not honest with you. I was afraid of what I was and afraid of what you made me want to be. I have been honest with you since. I intend to be honest with you for the rest of my life. You are my mate. My Luna. The person I choose above every other choice. I am not a gentle man. I am not simple, and I never will be. I come with everything you have seen, both the good and the brutal. But every part of me willingly and permanently belongs to you. ‎ ‎His teeth found my neck, over the original mark, biting clean and deep in a way that sent the bond flaring bright and hot. The pack felt it. The Alpha claimed his mate fully. Heat rushed through me, mixing with the bond until I could barely stand. ‎ ‎Then, it was my turn. "I ran into the forest on the worst night of my life. I was running away from something. I did not know yet that I was actually running toward you. I paused, glancing around at the familiar faces watching us. You are difficult and closed off and you stood outside my door at night instead of just knocking like a normal person, which I found both infuriating and endearing." Soft laughter rippled through the gathered pack. "You killed four wolves in under two minutes to protect me and then apologized for it. You let me kill my own enemies because you understood that it was mine to do. You are exactly what I needed. Not what I thought I wanted. What I actually needed." ‎ ‎My teeth found his shoulder, claiming him back. Something completed between us, visible as warmth spreading through the bond. The pack felt it too. A collective sigh moved through the circle. ‎ ‎The celebration afterward was small and genuine. Damon cried exactly as Sera had promised he would, absolutely denying it even as he wiped his eyes. Sera held my hands tightly. "He has been alone for so long. Thank you for not giving up on him." ‎ ‎"He made it difficult," I said with a small smile. ‎ ‎Sera laughed softly. "He does everything the hard way. It is a family trait." ‎ ‎Calla watched from her chair, her expression difficult to read. When I approached her later, she spoke quietly. "You are afraid of what you saw in the vision." ‎ ‎Not a question. "Can you see it too?" I asked. ‎ ‎"I can see that you are carrying something you have not shared. Lyra. Whatever you saw. Tell him." ‎ ‎"If I tell him he will try to change it." ‎ ‎"Perhaps he should be allowed to try. You are his mate, not his Oracle. Let him have the information and decide for himself what to do with it." ‎ ‎I sat with that for a long time. ‎ ‎Finding Theron after the celebration wound down, just the two of us in our rooms, the fresh mark still burning warmly, the bond wider open than it had ever been. I took a deep breath. "I need to tell you something." ‎ ‎Theron looked at me. "Tell me." ‎ ‎"When I try to see the Blood Moon night, the vision keeps showing me the same image. You, standing in the ceremony circle. The Convergence power is moving through you. And then the image breaks before I can see what comes after." ‎ ‎Theron went very still. ‎ ‎"I do not know if that means you carry it. I do not know what it means if you do. But Calla said I should tell you. So I am telling you." ‎ ‎Theron reached for my hand. "What do you want me to do with that information?" ‎ ‎"I do not know," I admitted. "I just did not want you walking into that night blind, not knowing what I had already seen." ‎ ‎"I was already walking into it. The difference is now I know you saw it coming and told me anyway. That matters." ‎ ‎We fell asleep with the fresh mark burning warmly and the bond wider open than it had ever been, and in the last moment before sleep I had one more Oracle vision, unbidden and sharp: the old families were not going to wait for the Blood Moon. They were moving in ten days. We had ten days less than we thought.
