Chapter 1: The Luna's Execution

1253 Words
The wind howled across the cliffs of Blackthorn Peak, carrying with it the scent of rain and blood. Aria Nightshade stood at the edge of the execution platform, her wrists bound with silver chains that burned against her skin. The moon hung high above the kingdom, cold and merciless, illuminating the thousands of wolves gathered below. Not one of them met her eyes. Not one of them spoke in her defense. Three years. For three years, she had served the Moonfang Kingdom as its Luna. Three years of loyalty. Three years of sacrifice. Three years spent loving a man who now stood silently beside her executioner. Her gaze lifted toward the Alpha King. Kael Nightfang. The man she had loved more than her own life. The man who had promised to protect her. The man who now watched her die. His expression was unreadable, carved from stone. Dressed in black royal armor, he looked every bit the powerful ruler the kingdom adored. Yet his silence hurt more than any blade. "Aria Nightshade," the royal elder announced. "You stand accused of treason against the Moonfang Kingdom. Do you deny these charges?" A bitter laugh escaped her lips. "Treason?" The crowd stirred. Her silver eyes swept over the gathering. "I devoted my entire life to this kingdom." No one answered. No one dared. The elder frowned. "Evidence has confirmed your involvement with enemy packs." "Evidence?" she repeated. Her gaze landed on a familiar face standing near the front. Vivienne Frost. Her best friend. The sister she had never had. Vivienne lowered her eyes dramatically, pretending to cry. The sight made Aria's stomach twist. Because she finally understood. It wasn't grief she saw. It was guilt. The pieces clicked together. The missing reports. The forged letters. The rumors. The lies. Everything pointed to one person. Vivienne. A chill raced down Aria's spine. "You." Vivienne looked up. Confusion flashed across her face. "Aria?" "You did this." Murmurs spread through the crowd. Vivienne shook her head rapidly. "I don't know what you're talking about." The performance would have been convincing if Aria hadn't known her so well. "You betrayed me." Tears filled Vivienne's eyes. "Please stop." The crowd immediately sympathized with her. Aria almost laughed. How perfect. Even now, they believed the liar. The elder slammed his staff against the stone. "Enough." Silence returned. "The council has reached its verdict." Aria's heartbeat slowed. She already knew the outcome. No one survives when the entire kingdom wants them dead. "Guilty." The single word echoed through the mountains. A few people cheered. Others looked away. Some cried. But none objected. Aria turned toward Kael one final time. "Look at me." For a moment, he didn't move. Then his golden eyes met hers. The pain she found there nearly shattered her. Pain. Regret. And something else. Fear. Why was he afraid? If he believed she was guilty, why did he look like a man attending his own funeral? "Tell them the truth," she whispered. Kael's jaw tightened. The silence stretched. Seconds felt like hours. Finally, he looked away. The last piece of her heart broke. "I understand now." Her voice barely carried across the platform. The elder raised his hand. "The sentence is death." The crowd erupted. Aria closed her eyes. Death. A strange calm settled over her. Perhaps because she had already lost everything. Her parents were gone. Her reputation destroyed. Her mate had abandoned her. And the child growing inside her would never see the light of day. A tear slipped down her cheek. Not for herself. For the tiny life she had only discovered days ago. No one knew. Not even Kael. The thought hurt more than the chains. She had imagined telling him. Imagined his smile. Imagined building a family together. Now those dreams would die with her. The elder pointed toward the cliff behind the platform. "By royal decree, the traitor shall be cast from Blackthorn Peak." The executioners approached. Aria allowed them to lead her forward. The cliff edge came into view. Hundreds of feet below, jagged rocks waited like hungry teeth. The storm above intensified. Thunder rolled across the sky. The moon disappeared behind dark clouds. Even nature seemed unwilling to witness what was about to happen. Aria stared into the abyss. Then she smiled. The reaction startled everyone. Including Kael. "You know what's funny?" she asked softly. No one answered. "I never feared death." The wind whipped through her silver hair. "I feared betrayal." Her eyes found Vivienne again. The woman's face had gone pale. Good. For the first time all night, fear flickered in her eyes. Aria stepped closer. "As long as I live, you'll never sleep peacefully." Vivienne trembled. The elder gestured impatiently. "Proceed." The executioners grabbed Aria's arms. Before they could push her, she turned toward Kael. Their eyes locked. A thousand memories flashed between them. The first time they met. Their first kiss. The bond ceremony. The promises. The dreams. Everything. "Did you ever love me?" she asked. The question cut through the roaring wind. For a moment, the entire mountain fell silent. Kael looked like he couldn't breathe. His fists clenched. Blood dripped from his palms where his claws had pierced his skin. Then, finally, he spoke. One word. "Yes." Aria froze. The answer wasn't what she expected. The raw emotion in his voice sounded genuine. Painfully genuine. Then why? Why had he let this happen? Why had he remained silent? Why hadn't he fought for her? Questions swirled through her mind. Questions she would never have answered. Because the executioners shoved her forward. The world vanished beneath her feet. Gasps erupted from the crowd. Aria fell. The cliff disappeared above. The cold air screamed past her. For a terrifying moment, panic consumed her. Instinct demanded she shift. But the silver chains suppressed her wolf. There would be no escape. No miracle. Only death. The kingdom became smaller and smaller above her. Faces blurred. Voices faded. Everything disappeared. Except one. Kael. She could still see him standing at the edge. And then— He moved. His eyes widened in horror. "No!" The scream echoed across the mountains. Aria's breath caught. The sound was filled with genuine terror. Not relief. Not satisfaction. Terror. As if he had realized something too late. As if he had made a terrible mistake. Suddenly, memories resurfaced. Small details she had ignored. Kael's strange behavior. His constant warnings. The fear in his eyes. The unanswered questions. A horrifying possibility formed. What if he hadn't betrayed her? What if someone had manipulated them both? What if— The thought never finished. A blinding silver light exploded around her. The mark on her wrist burned. Power surged through her body. Ancient. Wild. Impossible. The world froze. Even the rain stopped falling. Aria stared in shock. The silver light wrapped around her like a cocoon. A voice echoed through the darkness. Deep. Ancient. Female. "Your fate is not finished." Aria's heart pounded. "Who are you?" The voice ignored the question. "You were wronged." The light intensified. "You were betrayed." Images flashed before her eyes. Blood. War. Secrets. Lies. A crown stained with darkness. And Vivienne smiling beside a throne. Aria gasped. "What is this?" "The truth." The voice became softer. "The Moon Goddess grants you one final gift." The world shattered. Pain exploded through every part of her body. The silver light swallowed everything. Aria screamed. Then— Darkness. Complete darkness. Silence. And somewhere beyond the void, a new heartbeat began. The heartbeat of a second chance.
