Being Alpha was something we’ve always wanted but thanks to our little brother we never got the chance. We were told by our father that we were not ready to lead the pack and that our sweet younger brother was the type of leader that could bring our pack to the top. Old Alpha Ryan, he was just the perfect guy, and everyone loved him.
My sweet, kind, loving mate was a true warrior, loyal to her Alpha. I lost my mate and my legacy that day.
“Hey, what was so urgent?” he asked, voice laced with a sense of panic. The way his chest rose and fell, he had to run all the way here.
“Ah, yes, did you find Lyla?” I replied.
His face morphed into one of annoyance, frustrated with my question. He was about to say something but was interrupted by his beta.
“Morning, Alpha,” Tafari said, walking in the packhouse after him.
“Morning. Can we talk in the office?” He asked.
Tafari and I followed him into the office. We just stood there waiting for him to say something. He told us how he had found out his mate was Lyla, and he went to talk to her last night, but she wasn’t there, so he decided to wait for her.
“Did she show up this morning?” Beta Tafari asked.
“No, I figured since she didn’t come home, maybe she was at a friend's house. Have you seen her around the pack house?” my nephew asked me. He was worried sick about his precious mate.
“She hasn’t shown up here. She usually helps Susan in the kitchen to prepare breakfast before going to the daycare.”
Susan was already here and had finished most of the cooking.
“Check the daycare,” I said. “If she’s not there, I will mind-link the security team to be on the lookout for her and to let you know immediately.”
“Thanks.” He jumped to his feet ready to rush out of the door.
“Hey after you're done, come back to the office so that I can start showing you the ropes. The pack has its Alpha now. They’re going to want to start taking orders from you.”
“I hear you, I will be back in an hour. Fari, can you go talk to Ms. Susan and see if she came here at all this morning?”
“Yes, Alpha.”
The boys went their separate ways, and I was left alone in the office. My thoughts jumped back and forth a decision will have to be made soon. It’s time to show him the true meaning of loss.
