Chapter 2 - The Alpha's Return

1143 Words
CHAPTER 2   Alaric's POV It's time I go back home and fulfill my duty to my people, I've been away too long, and besides, I need to find my mate soon. As the Alpha of Misty Rock Pack, I have a responsibility to face. It's been 6 years since I joined the Marines. I joined not because I want to, but I have to stay away for a while because I need to. When my father died 6 years ago because of a rogue attack, the weight of the responsibility he left behind was too heavy for me, so I made an excuse of joining the Marines against my mother's wishes. But before I go back home and face my mother and my people, I will first go to the cemetery to visit my father. Yes, we buried him in the cemetery together with humans instead of burying him on our land. We are trying to avoid speculations from humans since my dad has been friends with many humans. I had human friends as well, way back in high school and the military. They don't know about us, who we are, and what we are, and I'm trying to keep it that way. On my way to my father's grave, I saw this girl not far away talking to herself. Well, since no one is around, I presume she's talking to herself or to whoever is lying 6 feet on the ground. She had long brown wavy hair, but I can't really tell what she looked like because her hair covered her face. She is writing something on a piece of paper while still chatting. She must be very lonely and misses the one she lost. Anyway, I'm not here for her. I'm here for my dad to pay respect and tell him I'm back and ready to take his place as the Alpha of our pack. I squat on the ground in front of my father's grave. " Hey Dad, I'm back. I'm sorry if it took me a while to come back; I'm here. I'm ready to take my responsibilities and duties to our people and take care of mom. I know you are disappointed in me because I ran away instead of leading our people. I promise you, dad, I'm never going to leave again, and I will find the rogue who killed you and answer for what he did. I also hope upon my return that I will find my mate and settle down. Alright, dad, I better get going. I know mom is waiting for me at the door. Let us not keep her waiting because she waited long enough for me to come home. I miss you, dad, and love you." I better get going. It's getting late, and I'm starving. On my way back to my car, I saw that the girl was no longer on the spot where I saw her. But as I drew near, I saw a piece of paper on the ground, she must have been in a hurry awhile ago and didn't notice she left the paper. I picked it up and looked at it. It's a letter addressed to hmmm no name. I better keep it and give it back to her when I see her again. I need to hurry home because it's getting dark. My mom would be worried by now. When I arrived at the packhouse, my guess was right. My mom is outside by the steps waiting for me. When I came down from my car, mom came flying down the steps and ran to give me a tight hug and crying. " Alaric, my son! You're home! Oh, my boy, I missed you so much. Welcome home son, let's get you inside. I know you're tired and hungry, I prepared a feast for your return, and everyone is waiting for your arrival." Her mom declared. " Everyone, huh? Alright, let's get this started." Alaric answered her mom and kissed her cheek. He did miss her mom a lot and felt guilty for abandoning her. And she's right everyone is inside waiting for him, his pack, his uncle, and his cousin. Everyone is so happy that he returned, they had many questions, especially his cousin Tricia. She is like a sister to him since he's an only child, so as Tricia, they are very close. That's why she sticks to him like glue. " So, my dear cousin, how have you been?" Tricia asked. " I'm good, my dear little cousin. How are you? How's school, and do you have a boyfriend already?" Alaric bombarded his cousin with questions. " Whoa, cuz, one at a time? Shouldn't I be the one to ask you questions? Are you ready to be the next Alpha?" answered Tricia while laughing. " Oh, I am, baby girl, so better watch out. I will be one strict Alpha, and the first thing I will do is to visit your school and have a chat with the Principal." " What?! For what? We never give problems to the school or the pack. You are so over your head, cousin." Tricia was surprised by what she just heard. Why would his cousin go to their school? " Anyways, cuz, mom and everyone, I am going to my room now. I want to take a shower and rest early. I'm tired and sleepy. I will talk to all of you tomorrow, Uncle Larry. I will go to school and your office tomorrow morning. I want to discuss something with you, but I will retire early to my room for now. Goodnight to all, enjoy the rest of the night. Goodnight, mom." He bid everybody goodnight and hugged his mother and kissed her forehead. When he entered his room, he took off his clothes right away, went to his bag, grabbed a shirt and sweatpants, and then went to the shower. After a very refreshing shower, he went straight to bed. He recalls the event today, and suddenly he remembered the letter he found at the cemetery. He got up and searched his coat for that letter. He's curious now about what was written there. He found the letter and brought it back to his bed, it was quite a long letter, and it started with "Dear You." Some words were a bit blurred. It looks like it got wet. His guess was the girl was crying when she wrote the letter. Alaric is having second thoughts about whether he should read the letter or not. He knows that it's private property, but something tells him that he should read it. Even Alec, his wolf, wants him to read it. He was curious about what was written there. And so, after arguing with his conscience for a few minutes, he decided to read the letter.
