Chapter 7

Mia Another round of a very exhausting ceremony was about to take place. I'm not a big fan of parties, so many people in a place at a time with loud blasting music that threatened to blow off my eardrums. I wore a sea-green dress that clung to my skin, showing off my curves. My hair poured down to my back and was decorated with some silver pins that added to the beauty. "You're all set, Luna." The maid that was attending to me did one last dab on my face with her makeup brush and smiled at me, obviously proud of her handwork. It was weird to be addressed as Luna. "Call me Mia." I saw the look of surprise that creased her face from the mirror. "I… I can't." She said and lowered her gaze to the floor. "What's your name?" "Fallon." I smiled at her when she looked up at me. "That's a beautiful name, Fallon. Let's be friends." She was also beautiful and looked very homely and kind. A gasp escaped her lips. "I can't be your friend. I'm nothing but your personal attendant, a maid, while you're the Luna of this great pack." Oh… my... goodness! Maybe I would die of boredom before I get killed in another surprise attack in this pack. Everyone has been uptight since I arrived and no attempt to strike a bond with me except Stewart who has been super kind and friendly to me since he met me. My mind went to the she-wolf that was staring daggers at me during the introduction in the morning. I've already gotten an enemy without stepping on her toes or saying a word. I wondered what it was about me that irked her so much to deserve that look. I took a deep breath and made another attempt. "You're at my beck and call, not only that, you're here to attend to my looks. It's not possible to ignore you all the time. In Gyde, my best friend and I usually comb our hair. So definitely, a bond would form between us even though it doesn't happen so fast." I watched with a smile at her mouth that was wide agape. She blinked and shook her head. "Oh… okay." "Thank you for the makeup and what you did to my hair." I glanced at my reflection, loving my look. The door opened and Edward walked in. Fallon bowed and quickly exited the room. I shifted uncomfortably under his scrutiny. He stared at me from my head to toe and my cheeks flushed crimson red. He wore a black long sleeved shirt with trousers. It seems black was his favourite. His blonde hair was let loose and some covered his face making him look incredibly sexy. "How are you holding up?" I hadn't seen him all day, but here he was knocking air from my lungs by just his mere appearance. "Just fine." At least no one has stopped me in my tracks and hurled insults at me for being latent. That's because you've been in the room all day. My subconscious mind reminded me and I slapped my forehead mentally. "I want you to be comfortable so feel free even at the party." "How is that supposed to work out when I was almost killed on my way here?" He scoffed and folded his arms across his chest. "What makes you think you were the target? It was my life the attackers were after not yours. Investigations are being carried out and whoever led that operation would be caught and punished." Edward had a lot of enemies if that's the case. Many would still try to oppose the most feared and ruthless Alpha in the region without fear. What if they learn of me and I become a target to get back at him? I didn't ask that for fear of the answer. "Okay." I said instead. "Let's go." His words held so much authority and I hated myself for cowering in his presence. What was supposed to be a welcome party didn't feel like one at all. The party was nice and all that but I didn't feel the warm welcome I was supposed to be receiving. Instead, the pack members danced at the dance floor, twirling around and going about their own business. I just watched from the barstool I was perched on as I drank some fruit juice. "Why are you all alone?" I turned to see Stewart beside me. He was panting hard in exhaustion from his dance. Edward was the only one who stood aside and watched everyone while engaging in conversations with pack members that approached him. It now felt like he was the one being welcomed back to the pack, not me. I shrugged at Stewart's question. "Not exactly my choice." "I would give you a little tip about the pack members here." Stewart leaned in as his voice fell in a whisper like he was about to let me in on a secret. "This is how you would win their hearts and gain trust. Trust me, you're going to thank me later." I furrowed my brows at him. He was beginning to sound sketchy at his over promise. "You don't look like you're eager to hear it." He feigned a frown and withdrew from me. "I…" I cleared my throat. "I want to know." I tried my best to sound believable. "Good." He wriggled his brows at me before looking around in suspicion. "First, we would start with why it seems a lot of the folks aren't happy about your appearance." He looked around with a sad expression on his face and I drew closer to him in curiosity. So it wasn't just me thinking in my head that they didn't like me. "Is there a story behind it?" He nodded. "Many years ago…" "Why are you here, Stewart?" Edward's cold voice broke the conversation between us and I stiffened at his presence. He glanced from me to Stewart and back again. "I'm keeping your mate company while you go about business as usual even when it's an informal gathering." "Get the hell out of here." Edward said with venom laced in his tone. Stewart smirked and walked away, not without giving me a look that said we would talk later. I couldn't help but ponder on what he was about to say. "Dance with me." He stretched out his hands for acceptance and I stared at it, baffled at his confidence. What if I didn't want to dance with him? Why would he demand a dance instead of asking? I pushed back the questions and annoyance as I took his hands in mine. The butterfly eruption occurred again and I tried to feel unfazed by them. It was time for something to be done about it.
