Chapter 7

Luna’s heart almost jumped out of her chest. It was Stephen. Out of all people, she couldn’t figure out why he decided to come there. Let alone how he knew where her new place was. After the breakup Stephen went mute on Luna. He was cold as if he didn’t know her anymore. All of the aftermath of the relationship replayed in Luna’s mind. Her crying and in a sunken depression, meanwhile Stephen was posting pictures out partying a few days later. The memories angered Luna. “Please leave,” she responded. She didn’t want to give him the time of day. Before Luke came along she never imagined that love was in the cards for her. She also had the idea that if things didn’t work out with Luke, that she was capable of having happiness without Stephen. Making the decision to go out and talk to Stephen, and now at midnight would be a horrible idea. Luna waited a few moments and went back and forth on her decision. Her brain told her a waste of time, while her heart said closure. After a few moments, she sprang up from the bed and ran to the living room window. She peered through the blinds making sure to be discreet. She watched Stephen walk to his car with his phone in hand, get in and drive off. It was so weird. Where was all of this coming from? Why does he want to finally talk when Luna’s finally trying to move on? Luna went back to her bedroom and paced the floor. Things didn’t make any sense. She flopped on her bed and put pillow over her head and did a light scream. She closed her eyes and forced herself to sleep. Days had passed and Luna went to class. She had a hard time focusing. She spent the whole-time texting Luke. He could tell she was off. “What time are you doing lunch today?” Luke texted. “Normally I go around 1pm,” Luna responded. “Well lets me join you,” Luke replied. Luna texted him with agreement and a meeting spot at a nearby sandwich shop. She pulled in and sat in her car for a moment, looking to see if she seen Luke’s car. There he was, coming right behind her. Luna smiled looking back and put her shades on and stepped out of the car. The sun was warm, and the weather was mellow. It was the perfect spring weather. Luna turned and put her hands on her hips. Luke came walking up. Luke was well over six feet tall and Luna had to look up to him. She grinned and they hugged. The excitement was obvious. They walked in and both ordered a two cold cut subs. They sat outside at a table. Somehow they managed to find the perfect little spot near the water fountain the sandwich shop had. They ate their lunches and ended up talking for hours after. Time seemed to fly by them. It was as if she was getting caught up with a long-lost friend she had. “I couldn’t get you off my mind last night,” Luke said. “Yeah, I was the same way. You left me frustrated,” Luna replied rolling her eyes and smirking. They both laughed and continued on. Luke’s phone went off and he turned it over and answered. “Hey man, what’s up?” He said putting the phone to his ear. Luna checked her phone and made herself seem busy. “Yeah, I’m out with a friend. I’ll call you later,” Luke responded. Luke ended the call and apologized as he put the phone in his pocket. “You’re fine, I understand completely,” she said. “Sorry, that was my cousin I told you about,” Luke said. “I have to meet your best guy, is he single?” Luna responded. “No, he’s actually single and kind of having girl problems,” Luke admitted. “That’s why he was calling me.” Luna clicked her home screen to look at the time. She had a photo of herself and Sade and got the idea. “Perfect, then we should double date? You, me, Sade and you boy?” Luna said. Luke gave Luna a smirk and replied, “Why not? I’ll set it up.” They cleared their trash and walked out to their cars. Luke stood in front of Luna with his hands on her hips. This felt like the real thing. As if they had been meant to be. Luke kissed her softly and slowly. Luna felt her heart begin to race. She was on a cloud when she was with him. He was so easy to talk to. One thing she knew was that she wanted to take her time, but he was making it so hard. They connected so easily. They held hands and kissed once again for a final goodbye. Luna got in her car and buckled herself in. She picked up her phone and went to her messages. She scrolled to Stephen’s message thread and hit delete. For the first time, she felt content with letting the past go. She buckled up and headed home to change for work. When she made it home she walked in on Sade and Matt together in Sade’s bedroom. The sounds of the oooh’s and aaah’s bounced off of the wall. They were having s*x. Luna rolled her eyes and went to her room and shut the door. “She preaches so much to me about Stephen and goes back to Matt like it’s nothing?” Luna questioned herself. “YES, YES!” Sade screamed. Luna could hear Matt’s voice give out a shriek and they room fell quiet. Luna changed clothes quickly and left out of her bedroom. She rolled her eyes and knocked on Sade’s door. “It’s time to go if you’re riding with me!” Luna shouted. Sade opened the door squeezing her robe in between her fingers to cover herself. “Give me five minutes, I’m coming!” Sade exclaimed. She got dressed and walked Matt to the door. “I’ll text you later, okay?” Sade said to Matt. “Okay that’s cool,” he replied. Sade shut the door and turned to Luna. “Let’s go, I don’t want to talk about it,” Sade said with an annoyed look on her face. They got into Luna’s car and rode to work together in silence. Luna felt awkward and irritated. Sade can make her own decisions, but it was frustrating that she could double back to Matt no matter what he did. When it came to Luna and her texting Stephen back, or hearing him out- that was out of the question. “Okay, go ahead and say it! I know, I know,” Sade blurted out as Luna parked the car. “Say what Sae? What you do, is your business,” Luna responded. Sade got irritated and got out slamming the door. They got into work and got back to ignoring each other. Luna became irritated and broke the silence once she seen Sade crying in the back office. “Sade talk to me, please,” Luna asked. Sade wiped her face and fixed her clothes. She stood up and brushed her hair behind her ears. Mollie walked in and rolled her eyes. “What are you both doing, I need you front. They turned and headed to the front and kept their distance from Mollie. “I’m ashamed and embarrassed,” Sade admitted. “I give you all this advice and I don’t take it myself. I know Matt doesn’t really care for me, but I keep him around because I just like hoping things will change.” Luna hugged her friend and stood back to make sure Mollie wasn’t coming. “I’m not judging you and I won’t lie when I tell you I was disappointed a little because I hoped you’d be up for a double date with Luke’s cousin but if you’re working things out with Matt then…” “It was a one-night stand, we never actually texted,” Sade admitted. Mollie came storming out and they turned back to their duties. “I’ll be leaving early today but if my niece comes today, her name is Michelle. Please let me know, she said she had a bad experience the other day,” Mollie said standing at front counter. “Michelle?” Luna questioned. “Yes, she came in and said she was told she had to leave because she couldn’t Facetime without earphones,” Mollie replied. Luna and Sade almost dropped their mouths. “She’s okay, got it?” Mollie demanded. “Yeah, no problem,” Sade replied. Mollie marched out and sped off. The girls were left in disbelief. Mollie, their boss was the aunt to Michelle, which was Stephen’s new “boo.” This world seemed smaller than ever in that moment.
