GODRIC FROWNED. IT was highly unusual for an EMT to make a run by himself. “I can do that. Why didn’t they give you somebody else? Surely you have backup?” The EMT shrugged again. “We’re short staffed tonight. All sorts of weird stuff happens on Halloween.” He fixed bloodshot, pale blue eyes on Godric and smiled, showing crooked, yellow teeth. Godric stared at the EMT. He seemed strangely familiar. The man had thinning, longish, dark hair that was stringy with grease, and his arms were smudged with dirt. But his hands appeared to be recently scrubbed. He was older too, probably in his late fifties or early sixties. The EMT caught Godric staring at the dirt on his arms and face, and he shrugged again. “I had a flat tire just before I got this call. I only had time to wash my hands. Sorry.
