CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR ADAM GARTH HELD THE woman in his arms and looked out over the cemetery, where the sun was just starting to rise over the ancient tombstones, nestled in a gray and purple sky. The black, claw-like arms of the massive tree spread across the horizon like a fungus, giving the place a decidedly haunted aspect. Adam frowned as the loudest voice inside his head screamed again, telling him to leave the girl alone, or he would join his father, mother, and grandparents in their moldy graves. Adam shook so hard he’d nearly dropped the girl several times. But he’d nursed the fantasy of her death far too long to let it go now.
