Chapter 2Jona: I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to wake you up. Jona: I shouldn’t have blown you off like that. I’m sorry. Jona: Let me know when you want to meet up next time. I have a few days off between Christmas and New Year’s. Again, I’m sorry. I read his messages while leaning against the kitchen counter, with a steaming cup of morning coffee in my hand as I’m looking at my phone with bleary eyes. I re-read them a second and a third time, counting the I’m sorrys. I didn’t misread; including the first message I read yesterday, he apologized four times. Four. We’ve been doing this…thing…for about eighteen months or so, and if I remember correctly, he’s apologized to me only once before, after he gripped me so tight he left bruises on my hips when he f****d me. He hadn’t looked repentant
