‘Nathaniel, what are you doing here?’ asked one of the guards who instantly recognised him.
‘I could not sleep, so I am doing you two a favour: go take a break, and report back ready for the next shift change.’
‘But we are on duty until dawn.’ replied the other guard naively.
‘If you are not interested in my offer, I can always find some other way to amuse myself.’ he said before turning about, signalling his immediate intention to leave.
‘Wait!’ called the veteran of the pair. ‘He is new to this, and he is an idiot.’
‘Fine.’ he said, turning to face the guards once more. ‘Just ensure that both of you are back here before the next shift arrives. Now get gone, the pair of you, before I change my mind.’
