Chapter Six Max “Goodnight Max.” Gary, the overnight stock clerk, said as I locked the front doors on my way out. I waved, then slid behind the wheel of my beat-up old car. It was embarrassing to be seen driving the ancient Volkswagen, but I didn’t have a car payment, and the insurance was stupidly cheap. My flashy wheels were at home in the garage, a Triumph motorcycle. I only took it out on weekends, when I’d occasionally drive to the mountains or the beach on days off.
