Adam was so genuinely happy tonight—more relaxed and joyful than I’d ever seen him. He seemed completely at ease, like the weight of the world had finally lifted off his shoulders. Maybe it was the news of the baby that brought this peace. Still, I couldn’t help but think about what he had just revealed.
If what he said was true, it meant that he held an unfair advantage over the others. He could command Alphas, just because of his genes. No wonder Lucas had been so desperate to win me over. He had tried to stand up to a power he could never hope to surpass.
“So how is it that I can defy you then?” I pressed, my curiosity getting the better of me. Adam threw his head back and laughed, a deep, rich sound that made my heart skip a beat. Then he stood, holding out his hand to me.
