Chapter 15

Hailey My heart began racing long before I understood why. At first, it was only a subtle awareness, a faint flutter beneath my ribs that made no sense as we left the calm of Red Moon's training grounds. I had felt nervous before. I had felt adrenaline before. This was neither of those things. Something warm moved beneath my skin. Soft at first. Barely noticeable. Tiny sparks flickered along my arms like embers carried on wind, trailing down my spine in delicate pulses of heat that left goosebumps in their wake. The sensation was not painful, but it was unfamiliar enough to make my muscles tense instinctively. It felt like anticipation. Like recognition. Like something inside me had briefly awakened... then hesitated. I didn't understand it. I didn't trust what I didn't understand. My instincts had always been clear, grounded in logic, discipline, training. Every reaction I had ever relied on came from experience and preparation. This feeling came from nowhere. Uninvited, unexplainable, dangerous. Or maybe not. That uncertainty unsettled me the most. I forced a small smile as I waved goodbye to Lila, hoping she wouldn't notice the tension tightening across my shoulders. Pulling my visor down, I mounted my bike and started the engine, the familiar vibration humming through my body. The sound grounded me. Machines made sense. Engines followed rules. Speed followed control. I accelerated quickly, the powerful machine responding instantly beneath me as I sped through the stone gates of Red Moon Pack. The late afternoon air rushed past, cool against my neck, the steady rhythm of the engine giving my thoughts something solid to hold onto. I leaned smoothly into each turn, weaving through the streets with precision, allowing muscle memory to guide me automatically. Speed had always helped clear my mind. Helped me think. Or sometimes helped me avoid thinking entirely. The strange warmth beneath my skin slowly began to fade, slipping away like a half-remembered dream dissolving in morning light. Whatever had caused it left behind only the faintest echo of awareness. Something had changed. Something subtle. Something only time would explain. Oh Goddess... what is wrong with me? By the time the familiar pine-lined road leading toward Ironclaw came into view, I had almost convinced myself the strange sensation had been nothing more than nerves. Then the smell hit me. Hard. Sharp. Wrong. Even through the filtered vents of my helmet, the scent forced its way in, thick and metallic. Blood. Fresh blood. Young blood. Cold dread coiled instantly in my stomach. The orphanage was not far from the gates. Ironclaw had always been known for one thing above all else: We protected our young. It did not matter where a pup came from. It did not matter which clan they belonged to. It did not matter who abandoned them. No pup was ever turned away. Alpha Darius believed that strength meant nothing if it did not protect those who could not yet protect themselves. The orphanage stood as proof of that belief. Which also made it a target. My grip tightened on the handlebars as instinct took over, the bike accelerating harder as gravel sprayed behind me. Something was wrong. Terribly wrong. As I reached the clearing, the sight before me confirmed my fear. Chaos. The massive wooden doors of the orphanage had been shattered inward, splintered wood scattered across the entrance like broken bones. Deep claw marks gouged the frame, splintered edges revealing the sheer force used to break through. Pups screamed inside. High-pitched cries filled with terror. Desperate and helpless. But where were the guardians? Where was the patrol? Someone should have responded already. Unless... My boots hit the ground before the bike had even fully stopped. My swords were already in my hands as I ran toward the entrance, adrenaline sharpening every sense to painful clarity. Inside was worse. Furniture overturned. Tables shattered. Claw marks carved deep into wooden walls. The air smelled of fear thick enough to taste. Two small pups huddled in the corner of the foyer, trembling violently as they clung to one another. Their wide eyes reflected pure terror, tiny hands clutching each other desperately as though letting go would mean disappearing completely. "I've got you," I said softly, keeping my voice calm despite the pounding of my heart. A sudden movement to my left shattered the moment. A massive brown wolf launched itself toward me, jaws wide, saliva flying from its teeth as it aimed directly for my throat. Training took control before fear could. Steel flashed. My blade cut cleanly through the air, muscle memory guiding the precise angle needed to strike fatally. The sword sliced through fur, muscle, bone. The rogue's head separated from its body before momentum carried it forward. The body collapsed heavily beside me. No hesitation. No pause. I gathered the pups quickly, one tucked securely against my side while the other clung desperately to my shoulder, fingers gripping tightly into my jacket. A low growl rumbled from the doorway. Another wolf blocked the exit. Grey fur streaked with dirt and dried blood. Larger than the first. Stronger. Its eyes were wild, unfocused, consumed by the feral hunger rogues eventually surrendered to. Holding the pups with one arm, I adjusted my stance, calculating distance, timing, angle. The wolf crouched low, muscles tightening before launching forward faster than expected. Its jaws clamped down onto my upper arm with brutal force. Pain exploded instantly, white-hot and blinding as teeth tore through leather, skin, muscle. Bone. I felt bone. My breath caught in my throat as agony shot through my body in violent waves. But pain did not matter. Only one thought existed. Protect the pups. Instinct took over completely. I twisted sharply, forcing my injured arm downward while pushing the pups beneath the overturned table beside me. "Stay down!" I commanded, voice strained but firm. My free hand moved automatically toward the dagger strapped to my thigh. The rogue shook its head violently, teeth grinding deeper into flesh as warm blood soaked through my sleeve. My vision blurred. Heat spread down my arm. Still, I struck. The dagger drove upward into the wolf's throat with brutal precision, burying deep as resistance gave way beneath the blade. Warm blood spilled across my fingers. The rogue collapsed heavily beside me, body twitching before finally going still. My breathing came uneven now. Too fast. Too shallow. The room tilted slightly as pain pulsed through my arm in relentless waves. The pups whimpered beneath the table. Then I heard it. A howl. Deep. Powerful. Ancient. The sound vibrated through the walls, through the floor, through bone itself. It was not simply loud, it carried authority. Command. Dominance. The rogues still inside the building scattered instantly, panic replacing aggression as the sound echoed across the compound. Silence followed. Heavy. Reverent. My vision struggled to focus as I forced myself to remain conscious. And then I saw him. A massive black wolf stood within the ruined foyer, larger than any wolf I had ever seen before. He seemed to fill the space completely. Dominant, ancient and unchallenged. His presence pressed against the air itself, suffocating in its intensity. Midnight black fur layered with faint strands of silver that shimmered like frost beneath moonlight. Ice-blue eyes locked onto mine. Piercing. Knowing. Within them... pain. Not physical pain. Something deeper. Something older. Something that did not belong in the eyes of a creature built entirely for power. Something tightened painfully in my chest as our gazes held. The fear. The chaos. The blood. Everything faded for one suspended moment. Something about him felt... Important and familiar. But my strength was fading too quickly to understand why. Darkness crept slowly inward, my vision narrowing as the pain in my arm intensified beyond what my body could endure. The last thing I saw before everything disappeared was the massive black wolf stepping closer, something almost human reflected in the sorrow within his gaze. Then everything went dark.
