Chapter 18

The Bond Breaks The waiting room is silent... but not peaceful. Hospitals carry a different kind of quiet. Not calm. Not rest. A tense stillness that waits for something to change. Kael sits forward in his chair, elbows resting on his knees, hands loosely clasped. Still as stone. Controlled. But control is a fragile thing when instinct begins to stir. Asher leans against the far wall, arms folded across his chest, watching every movement in the corridor with quiet calculation. Zane paces. Back and forth. Back and forth. Restless energy coils tightly beneath his skin, storm pressure building behind his ribs. Rider stands near the window, gaze fixed outside, jaw tight, tension rolling off him in slow dangerous waves. None of them speak. They do not need to. The bond hums between them, alive and newly awakened. Mate lives. Mate breathes. Mate exists. Then something shifts. The air changes. Subtle. Wrong. Cold awareness slides through the bond like ice cracking beneath weight. Kael's head lifts slowly. Fenrir rises instantly beneath his skin. Gone. The word lands with quiet devastation. Asher feels it at the same moment Hawk's instincts sharpen. The forest inside him recoils, roots searching instinctively for what was once there. Nothing. Zane stops pacing mid-step. The storm inside him stills unnaturally. Rider's fingers tighten against the window frame. Tempest snarls low in warning. Mate is not near. Mate scent fading. Mate... gone. The four brothers move at the exact same moment. Chairs scrape harshly across tile flooring as they surge to their feet. The hallway seems too slow. Too narrow. Too empty. Kael reaches the hospital room first. The door swings open hard enough to slam against the wall. Empty. The bed sheets are disturbed. IV line removed. Window slightly open. Her scent lingers faintly in the air like the ghost of warmth where a fire once burned. Vanilla. Wild strength. Steel. But fading. "She left," Zane growls, voice edged with rising thunder. Rider inhales sharply, eyes narrowing as instinct takes control. Tempest moves forward inside his mind, senses sharpening to razor precision. Trail broken. Artificial interference. Vehicle scent. Engine oil. Rubber. Someone helped her leave. Asher scans the room calmly despite the tension rolling through him like deep shifting earth. "She did not leave alone," he says quietly. Kael's gaze hardens. Cold. Focused. Determined. "No," he agrees. Fenrir's low growl vibrates through the bond. Taken. Or hidden. Neither acceptable. Boots strike hard against polished floors as they move swiftly through the hospital corridors. Doctors step aside instinctively. Nurses avoid eye contact. Every wolf inside the building feels the pressure of four dominant Alphas moving with singular purpose. They reach the front entrance in seconds. Kael stops suddenly. Her scent does not lead this way. Wrong direction. Rider crouches slightly, fingers brushing lightly against the floor where faint traces remain. Tempest tracks carefully. Precise. Patient. "There," he says quietly. Rear exit. Zane is already moving. Storm energy crackles visibly in the tension of his shoulders. They follow the fading thread of scent toward the back of the building. Tyre marks. Fresh. Vehicle recently departed. Direction unclear. Kael's jaw tightens. Fenrir's dominance presses heavily beneath the surface. Find her. Now. Behind them, a new presence approaches. Controlled. Measured. Alpha Darius. The Alpha of Ironclaw Pack observes them carefully, sharp eyes noting the tension rolling through each of them. "You are searching for something," he states calmly. "For someone," Asher corrects evenly. Kael steps forward. "Where is Hailey?" The question lands heavily between them. Darius' expression remains composed, but something flickers briefly behind his eyes. "She was here under medical supervision," he replies carefully. "She is no longer here," Rider says flatly. The temperature in the air drops noticeably. "Explain," Kael says quietly. Fenrir's dominance rolls beneath the surface of the single word. Darius studies them carefully. "Hailey is under my protection," he says finally. "As she always has been." Zane steps forward, storm energy barely restrained. "She is our mate." Silence spreads heavily between them. Understanding sharpens in Darius' gaze. So. It has begun. Before he can respond, another voice cuts sharply through the air. "Well, well... what do we have here?" Jaxon. Future Alpha of Ironclaw. Arrogance practically radiates from him as he approaches, hands loosely tucked into his pockets, expression twisted in lazy amusement. His gaze flicks between the four brothers. Measuring. Provoking. Mocking. "You four look awfully serious for men chasing after that little runt," he says with a smirk. The bond between the brothers tightens instantly. Danger sparks. "She's nothing special," Jaxon continues casually. "Just an orphan warrior we took pity on." Zane's eyes flash dangerously. Lightning ready to strike. Rider's posture shifts subtly, predator instinct rising sharply. Tempest does not tolerate insult lightly. Asher remains still... but the air around him feels suddenly heavier. Rooted. Immovable. Kael steps forward slowly. Controlled. Measured. Terrifying in his quiet restraint. Fenrir's dominance presses heavily against the space between them. "Choose your next words carefully mut," Kael says softly. Jaxon scoffs lightly. "What? You travelled all this way for her? She's barely pack-ranked. No family name. No political value. No alliance advantage." His smirk widens. "She is nothing of worth." The silence that follows is lethal. Four Alphas. Four predators. One shared instinct. Protect. Rider's voice comes low. Cold. Deadly precise. "She is worth everything." Zane's storm energy crackles visibly beneath his skin. "You will not speak of her again." Asher's calm tone carries absolute finality. "You do not understand what you are interfering with." Kael steps closer. Ice settles into every syllable. "She is ours." The bond hums violently between them. Ancient instinct awakened. Ancient claim recognised. Alpha Darius studies them carefully. Measuring strength. Recognising inevitability. "The girl has lived under Ironclaw protection since infancy," Alpha Darius says carefully. "And now she carries the bond of four Alphas." The balance of power has shifted. Jaxon scoffs again. "You're serious?" His laugh is hollow. "That girl? Your mate?" His expression twists in disbelief. "You can have her." Dismissive. Cruel. "She was never anything special." Zane moves first. Too fast to track. His fist slams into the wall beside Jaxon's head hard enough to crack plaster. Thunder restrained. Barely. "Speak carefully," he warns. Rider's voice cuts quietly through the tension. "She is afraid." Asher nods slightly. "She ran because she does not understand." Kael's gaze sharpens toward the forest beyond pack borders. Fenrir's instincts pull relentlessly toward her fading trail. "She is injured," he says quietly. "And alone." Unacceptable. The four brothers turn simultaneously toward the gates. Unified. Focused. Determined. The hunt has changed. No longer search. Now pursuit. Because the mate bond has awakened. And nothing in this world... Will keep them from finding her again.
