When an ambush didn’t happen, I took the last step into the room. Shelves lined the walls, and boxes and crates were stacked haphazardly, leaving little aisles between them. “Storeroom?” I asked, turning to look around us. “Looks like,” Cambious agreed, moving toward a nearby shelf full of books. “Some of these are ancient.” He turned toward me, then froze, his eyes on a dark corner. He pulled me closer. “There is someone here,” Cambious whispered, his lips brushing my ear so he could keep his voice almost soundless. I could hear something, frightened breathing, and the near-silent shuffle of skin against stone. Cambious gestured for me to go left around the stack of boxes between us and the corner, as he moved to the right. It didn’t make sense…this was no guard hiding in the shadows.
