Evelyn’s POV
The evening sun had risen over the horizon, I sat by the edge of the room, by the window gazing out into the open field while thinking of this new deal I just made with the most dangerous man in California, aside being the wealthiest entrepreneur, he's said to control a lot of mafia groups, political cartels and other wealthy men. In the committee of elites, whatever he says is done.
I never believed to be with such a man but circumstances warranted me. I can't regret it now.
I sniffed in a bit of the evening air wishing it was those times, I would go call Liam as he's free, then we would take a walk together along the vast fields of our estate but those moments were gone with the wind.
“Maybe if I can't take it with him, I should be able to take it with my daughter.” I said to myself, shifted the chair with my body rising up. I was heading to the nursery.
We had several nannies coming in from the nanny agency nearby to come cater for Melissa but we had a permanent one though, my reason, I didn't want my daughter to get used to another woman and take her as a second mother. Before she begins to bond with any of them, she's withdrawn and a new one comes. At the beginning, she would cry her heart out but over time she has become used to it.
I have all the time in the whole world to take care of her but as a pregnant woman, I end up getting so lazy, unexpectedly, needing more rest. When I can't be with her, my nannies do that. I didn't feel any bad, I also needed some alone time.
So I knocked at the nursery. “Surprise…. “ I teased, grabbing the handle of the door and walking in. Melissa leapt up, rushing towards me, jumping on me.
“Mom, where have you been? I missed you so much. “You should have been the one coming to teach me here and not Aunty Gladys.”
I smiled, lifting my eyes from her to Gladys. She smiled. “Cute, little girl.” We blushed over the compliment from where I grabbed her wrist.
“Can I borrow her for the evening, I just wanna have a little walk.”
“Girl, you don't need permission for that.” Beauty chuckled. “You're her mom, after all.” She c****d her head, letting out a strangled laugh before a proud look, smitten by my kind, playful attitude, she could even call me girl even when I was the boss. I smiled, breaking with a half chuckle.
“It's nothing.”
“Okay ma'am.” She added, smiling more. I nodded, leading Melissa who was already jumping happily off the nursery.
It was going to be another beautiful time with my daughter. Joy brewed inside of me. Since Liam has rejected her being a girl, that she can't be her heiress, it's my sole responsibility not to make her feel unwanted. I remembered when she used to be daddy's girl, probably then he wasn't with Chloe, she was just his secretary now.
“Where do we go?” I leaned to ask. Already the estate was vast, with different sites, seeming parks, it was of course a state park before the government leased it out for sale citing the small space of it for such function.
“Let's go to the steps circus.” Melissa squealed.
“Wooh!” I gasped. That one place I was scared off is rather the place she loved and wanted to visit.
“Well, let's go there.”
I'd already asked her where she wanted us to go and I couldn't take back my words but this place was hell’s put, windy steps extending deep down at the center. Here the evening sun shone the brightest and looking up was equivalent to looking at heaven but down, hades. I would just sit at the rear, grab her and look up.
My body released a swift shiver.
“Goshh.”
A few meters from this place, my phone rang. The first person who came to mind was Liam. I hit my head.
Fucking no.
I needed to forget about him even though he was my husband. We're in an open marriage, let's look forward to my new partner. Alexander.
I pulled the phone off the trousers of my trousers. The screen was on and someone's name other than Liam lined up the screen.
Alexander.
My eyes first went wide. “Why's he calling me at this time?” I just asked myself but I couldn't get a response except I respond. And Melissa was staring, she saw the look on my face. Widened eyes and a blush. She deserved an explanation but she wasn't old enough to handle this. I was even thinking of handing her over to her favorite aunt and going over to visit with Liam on weekends if only he would agree to come with me, or with Alexander. Either of them.
I dragged my finger to the right, the call timer was up and next, his rich, powerful tone was up.
“What's up, Evelyn. Where are you?”
“I'm at the estate? What's up?” I toned my voice into the eloquent, non-chalant woman king who needed no man to save her, just with a man for her selfish need.
“I'm coming over in the next hour. Be ready.”
“Urgh? For??”
Saliva finished in my throat.
“Am I not your man again?” He whined.
“Yes, you are but at least we never made an agreement to meet at the estate.”
“Trying to help, don't you get?”
I rolled my eyes over. “What do you mean?”
“Or….. “ His voice lingered. “Are you scared of what Liam would do to you when I leave?”
I chuckled. “You can't be serious. Who's afraid of him?”
“Oh, I thought you were.”
“But the thing is will he let you come into his house?”
“So far as you signed a new marriage deal with him, I mean you agreed to an open marriage and he already brought in a woman.”
“Uhmm.”
“See you in the next hour. Where's your daughter?”
“Urgh?” Did I just hear that well? “You care about my daughter?”
“Mom, who's that?” Little Melissa looked up. My lips folded up, I didn't know what to tell her. The new man her mom is entangled with?
What about dad? I was sure she would ask.
“I can really imagine you care about my daughter.” Tears welled in my eyes and I quickly moved the back of my hand to wipe it off before Melissa noticed.
“Surprised?”
“Yes, of course.” When the dad didn't care about his new baby in Chloe’s womb.
I released a big puff of air. What can I say? That's life. No one expected it but I'm glad I have Alexander. Liam would be getting a bite of his medicine.
Thanks to Alex.
“See ya tonight.” I was excited as I cut the call ready to see him, not for love, not for s*x but to rip Liam’s heart apart while he's still alive. I knew how insecure men like him operated.
