The Dirty old man 5

678 Words
I had joined Metrio's household only last night. It was my very first day as the only maid in the house, and I was still trying to learn every corner of the enormous place—the kitchen, the dining room, the laundry room, the servants' quarters, and, most importantly, the routines and expectations of the man who owned it all. There was no other maid to ask when I wasn't sure about something. Everything was my responsibility. By evening, I was exhausted, but I still made sure dinner was ready on time. I carried the first dish into the dining room and carefully placed it on the table. “Dinner is served, sir.” Metrio was sitting at the head of the table. He looked up from his glass. His dark eyes settled on me, and I immediately lowered mine. I was still nervous around him. I barely knew him, and yet his presence had a way of making the entire room feel different. I brought the remaining dishes one by one, arranging everything exactly as I had been instructed. Once I finished, I stood beside the table with my hands folded neatly in front of me. Metrio looked at the food. Then at me. “You prepared all of this?” “Yes, sir.” “This is your first day.” “Yes.” He studied me for another moment. “You're learning quickly.” “Thank you, sir.” I turned to step away, but his voice stopped me. “Stay.” I immediately stopped. “Yes, sir?” “Come here.” I slowly walked toward him. He watched me approach without saying anything. Then, unexpectedly, he said, “Sit.” I hesitated. “Where, sir?” His gaze remained fixed on me. “My lap.” My heart jumped. I glanced toward the empty dining room, suddenly unsure of what to do. I had only arrived the previous night. I was his maid. I didn't know what the rules of this house were yet, and I certainly hadn't expected an order like this on my first day. Still, his voice left little room for argument. I carefully sat down. I kept my posture stiff, my hands resting nervously in my lap. “You're tense,” he said. “I'm just nervous, sir.” His expression shifted into the faintest hint of amusement. “You've been nervous since you arrived.” I didn't know how to respond. He reached for his glass and held it toward me. “Drink.” I looked at him, then at the glass. I hesitated before taking a small sip. His eyes remained on me. When I finished, he lowered the glass. “Enough.” I nodded. “Yes, sir.” For a few seconds, neither of us spoke. Then he finally said, “You can go.” Relief washed through me, and I carefully stood. I had barely taken a step when his voice followed me. “Go to my room.” I stopped. “Your room, sir?” “Yes.” My heart began beating faster again. He picked up his glass as though the order were perfectly ordinary. “Wait for me there.” I swallowed. “Yes, sir.” I turned toward the staircase. Then he added, in that same deep, commanding voice, “And don't worry about the dishes. I'll deal with them later.” I glanced back at him. “But I'm the maid, sir. I'm supposed to—” “Tonight, you're finished.” His eyes held mine. “That is an order.” I lowered my head. “Yes, sir.” I walked upstairs slowly, still trying to understand the strange turn the evening had taken. I had been in this house for barely twenty-four hours. I was still learning where everything belonged. I was still learning his rules. And now Metrio had ordered me to wait in his room. Whatever happened next, I knew one thing for certain. My first day as his maid was nothing like I had imagined.
