The dirty old man

730 Words
My name is Ingi, and I never imagined that one day I would become a maid. Yesterday, I had absolutely nothing—not a home, not a stable job, and barely enough money left to buy food. My stepparents had kicked me out after accusing me of stealing money from the house. I tried to explain that I hadn't stolen anything, but they didn't believe me. They threw my bag outside and told me never to come back. I had nowhere to go, so I spent the night trying to find somewhere safe, telling myself that the next day I would find a job. Any job. I didn't care what kind of work it was anymore. I just needed money and somewhere to stay. I had a little savings with me, but after paying for food and a place to sleep for a short while, even that was almost gone. I spent hours walking through the streets with my small bag hanging from my shoulder, wondering what I was going to do next. I was exhausted, hungry, and honestly terrified. I kept looking around for shops, restaurants, or houses where someone might need help, but nobody seemed interested. I was almost ready to give up when I noticed a small advertisement stuck to a notice board. I almost walked past it, but one line caught my attention: LIVE-IN MAID REQUIRED. GOOD SALARY. ACCOMMODATION PROVIDED. I stopped immediately and read it several times. Accommodation provided. Those three words felt like a lifeline. I didn't have experience working professionally as a maid, but I knew how to clean, cook simple meals, wash clothes, organize a house, and take care of almost everything that needed to be done. I copied the address into my phone and started walking. After nearly an hour, I finally reached the place. The house was decent, much bigger than anything I could afford, but it wasn't some enormous mansion either. There was a neat garden in front, a wide entrance, large windows, and expensive-looking furniture visible through the glass. I stood outside the gate for several minutes, wondering whether I should actually go in. I looked down at my old clothes and worn-out slippers and suddenly felt embarrassed. What if they rejected me the moment they saw me? But I had nothing to lose anymore. So I took a deep breath and rang the bell. A woman opened the door and looked at me from head to toe. I nervously told her I had come about the maid position. She asked if I had seen the advertisement, and I quickly nodded. She let me inside. The house was even nicer from the inside, and I immediately became conscious of every dirty mark on my slippers. She asked me a few questions about my experience, whether I could cook, clean, wash clothes, and stay overnight. I answered honestly. I didn't have professional experience, but I had been doing household work for years, so I knew how to manage a home. When she asked why I needed the job so urgently, I lowered my eyes and simply told her that I couldn't stay with my family anymore. She didn't ask for details, and I was grateful for that. I thought she would be the person interviewing me, but a few minutes later, I heard footsteps coming from upstairs. I looked toward the staircase as a man slowly walked down. That was the first time I saw Metrio Ricci. He looked to be in his early fifties, yet there was nothing frail or old-fashioned about him. He was tall and well-built, dressed in a perfectly fitted dark shirt and trousers. His neatly styled hair was touched with a little gray, and a pair of elegant glasses rested on his face. His features were sharp and striking—a strong jaw, defined cheekbones, and dark eyes that seemed to notice everything around him. There was something effortlessly charming about him. Even without saying a word, he carried the kind of confidence that made the entire room feel different when he entered it. At that moment, I knew absolutely nothing about him. I didn't know much about his family, his position, or the world he belonged to. I only knew that he was the man who lived in this house—and that somehow, walking through that door had just changed my life.
