Chapter 5

1002 Words
Julie sat in the doctor's office gaping at him. Her hands trembled and she held them together in an attempt to make them stay still. The doctor glanced at the papers in front of him and then looked up at her. "You know we're trying our best right? But.." He paused and examined her for a bit before continuing. "She can't keep depending on the dialysis, she needs a surgery soon. As soon as possible. Or else, I'm afraid something terrible will happen." He said. Julie opened her mouth to say something. But instead, no words were coming. It seemed like something heavy was preventing the words from coming out. She knew already that something like this was bound to happen. She didn't just think it was going to be this soon. She swallowed hard and nodded at the doctor then stood up, left the office and headed to the room where Ivy was kept. She didn't know exactly what to think except for the fact that she knew they couldn't afford the surgery and that her parents weren't even doing anything to help either. She was only a highschool girl with jobs that didn't even pay well for her to help run the family, not to talk of paying for a surgery. She felt hopeless as the tears welled up in her eyes making her to wipe them off with the back of her hand. She was going to stay strong and find a way. After all Ivy was the only reason she was putting up with everything happening to her. Ivy was the only reason she wanted to live, the only reason why she worked at her two jobs without complaining no matter how tired she was and the only person that made her want to come home. And she was going to make sure Ivy lived. Julie reached the room where Ivy was and entered inside. She saw her sister lying on a bed there with her(Ivy) class teacher sitting beside her. On seeing Julie, the teacher stood up and grabbed her bag. "Take care of her okay?" She said then patted her back and left. Julie sat beside her sister, just where the teacher had been and stared at her sister who was sleeping. She took her sister's hand in hers and interlocked her fingers in hers. She could feel how skinny her sister was getting day by day and how almost lifeless she looked. Her sister was suffering, that she knew and she couldn't help but feel so sorry for her. Just then, her sister's hand moved and she looked up to see she was awake. She smiled down at her and held her hands even more tightly. "Uhm.. Julie," Ivy said looking at her with those precious hazel eyes. "Am I going to die?" She asked. "No you're not. You're going to stay with me for a long time okay?" Julie answered still smiling at her. Her sister reached for her face and touched her cheeks. "But you looked like you were crying." She said again reaching for her cheeks. "No, I wasn't Ivy. You'll be fine, I promise," Julie said hugging her. "Now let's go home." Julie told her. ~ After having finished work for the day, Julie sat in front of the back door to where she worked. It was past eleven already and to say she was exhausted, wasn't even up to half of what she felt. After she had taken Ivy home, she had stayed with her until she fell asleep then went to work. She hadn't bothered about going back to school and when it occurred to her again, school had closed already. As she sat down gathering up the remaining energy she had so as to use it to go home, she saw someone from a distance, a guy obviously, coming towards her. The street light on the road weren't quite functioning making the whole area to be a dark apart from the moon in the sky and the bulbs on a few other walls including theirs. She stood up trying to make out the his face from the shadows, hoping it wasn't someone bad. As the he came closer, she held the door handle in case of anything that was going to happen. Finally some rays of light fell on the his face as the he came directly to where she was standing and she recognized him instantly. "Hey its just me. No need to look like you just saw a ghost." He said smiling at her. He was the guy she'd met when she was crying at the pavement some days back. "You again." She snapped frowning at him. "You're stalking me now?" "No, no I'm not. Really. I live around here and I come here often. I told you I know you." He replied. "I'm seriously not a stalker, I mean that'll just be creepy." She looked at him as he smiled at her, his silvery hair shinning like diamonds under the lights. She noticed he was carrying something in a white nylon bag. "Oh right.. this.. I.. uh.. I got it for you." He said raising the bag up for her to see. "Why?" She asked folding her arms. He touched the back of his neck awkwardly. "I.. brought it for you. I didn't think you would have eaten so.." He trailed off looking at her quite unsure of what next to say. Julie rolled her eyes at him and opened the backdoor. "Thanks but no thanks stalker, I don't need your help." "I just want to- " No", She cut him off not wanting to hear about any thing he was going to say. "We aren't friends stalker. Bye."She said then left him there as she closed the door behind her. Again. * * * Hey you, how are you? Here's another chapter. Let's keep on reading. - We're all stars and we shine differently. ??
