So maybe Julie was wrong after all.
All these time, she had thought that her mum's reckless life and her dad being broke was what was making them have fights every now and then. Sure that was enough reason to have misunderstandings but hearing now that her father equally was cheating on her mum, was something she was not expecting or rather, something she didn't know.
She didn't know what to feel exactly. Sadness? Anger? Disappointment? Or three of them together.
It was just something she never thought her father would do.
Maybe yeah she felt sad, angry and disappointed but she knew she was more disappointed than she was angry or sad.
She was in school now and her class had ended a few minutes earlier and she was free for the next period. She walked down the hallway not knowing exactly what to do until the next class.
Almost immediately, she saw Marco from a distance leaning on a locker and speaking to someone. She took out her phone and checked her reflection to see if she looked 'presentable' enough. Satisfied with what she saw, she took a deep breath and walked forward to meet him while playing out - in her mind - possible things to say in order to start a discussion with him.
As she approached him, she saw him smile widely which helped in boosting her confidence to talk to him. She then saw him straighten up making her see who he was speaking with.
And it was her former best friend, Audrey.
She saw Marco place his hand on her waist while Audrey smiled back at him.
She stopped abruptly gawking at them wondering what was going on between them. She then saw Audrey stand on tip toes and whisper something to Marco while he nodded smiling all the more.
Her heart sank
She felt her eyes well up with tears as she turned away from them to go in the opposite direction. Instead she ended up bumping into a group of girls she always prayed she would never encounter.
"Sorry for that." She apologized quickly, staring at the ground to avoid them from seeing her tears while attempting to get away from there in a hurry.
One of the girls - Hailey put out a leg which she didn't see in time to avoid, thereby making her trip and falling face front to the ground while they laughed.
"Oops, sorry for making you trip." Hailey said, her fake apology overflowing with sarcasm making the girls and most people around to laugh.
Julie's vision blurred with the tears that were impatiently waiting to pour down. She wiped her eyes with the back of her hands and started collecting her books that were scattered on the floor. From the corner of her eyes, she saw Audrey drag Marco away from the scene.
~~
Julie sat on the pavement behind the class blocks and bent her head as if in an attempt to cover the embarrassment she had just felt. But that in fact was the least of things she was worried about. The scene of Marco and Audrey kept on replaying in her mind and as much as she wanted and wished to unsee it, she just couldn't. It made her so pitiful and at the same time so mad.
One reason was because, Audrey used to be her best friend from when they were in middle school. Audrey was one of the two people who knew she loved Marco. Audrey also knew a handful of things about her which nobody knew but now they weren't best friends again, friends even, it felt like Audrey was just a stranger with her secrets.
Two was that Marco knew her and Audrey weren't friends again and whatever happened between them, she suspected Marco knew all about that.
But again who was she to them anyways. She didn't even know if she had any rights to be angry at them because she didn't even ever date Marco. She was just the girl who confessed her love to a boy, trying to please him and waiting for him to finally see some good in her and like her. She was just a girl with a one sided love. That's all she was.
And to Audrey, she was just an old friend. That was all there was.
"You know, if I were you, I would stand up to those girls." Julie heard someone say from beside her.
She raised her face from her laps to see an unfamiliar guy sitting almost next to her. She hadn't noticed when he had come to sit there. Becoming conscious of herself, she wiped her face with her palms and tucked her hair behind her ears.
"Who are you?" She asked. Her eyebrows drawing together as she frowned at him.
"You don't even remember me?" He asked c*****g his head to a side. "That hurts," He said feigning sadness and holding his hand to his heart.
"Anyways, I said you'd have taught those girls a lesson, they won't dare pick on you next time." The guy said as he stretched his legs forward and looked at her. The corners of his mouth turning up into a soft smile.
"I'm not you and why do you care what I do?" Julie shot at him and stood up. "Please leave me alone and don't talk to me again." She warned as she grabbed her bag and walked out leaving him there and going back into the school.
