She got her books out from her locker for the next class and shut it only to see the face of the only guy she had ever felt something deep for looking down at her.
And then her heart sank.
To actually think that maybe she would finally make him like her as much as she liked him was something which seemed delusional and impossible.
"You didn't come to the movies yesterday." She said looking at him and knowing he would come up with some excuse right away as to why he stood her up.
He touched the back of his neck and bit his lower lip. "Something came up." He said simply.
Just as she expected.
Something more important than she was came up so he probably had to go for the much more important one.
And it wasn't her.
And even if she was used to it, it still didn't stop that sharp pain in her chest from being there. Because she knew no matter how many times she felt that pain, she'd never get used to it.
But instead, she smiled at him - a smile that she could always feel quivering - just like she did any other day he made her feel that way then shook her head. "it's fine. Really," She said fighting back tears she knew would pour out as of any time at the moment. "I didn't wait too long though."
She lied.
And she was pretty good at it.
The picture of her, working double shifts in order to have a free day to hang out with him, waiting in the cold night in front of the theatre, dressed in nothing but a short sleeved top and a skimpy skirt in an attempt to look beautiful for him, sitting for hours to get her makeup perfectly done after watching series of YouTube makeup videos and managing to get her brown hair done all pretty while hoping with crossed fingers and a positive mind, that she would see him pull up in front of her in his car, smile at her and tell her she looked perfect.
And here she was, lying, brushing it off like it was nothing and hurting herself terribly inside.
"Okay, I'm sorry still. I should have called or something." He said smiling awkwardly.
Exactly. That was something she would have appreciated.
"Yeah. It's fine."
"So.. uh, I'll see you later?"
"Yeah."
"Bye."
"Bye." She said still smiling at him. And as soon as he walked past, her face revealed exactly what she felt.
Hurt.
She felt her eyes wet already and blinked hard to keep the tears there. She even noticed she had been clenching the phone she held in her hand so tight that her hand hurt. She tried to keep the tears at bay but almost immediately, she was walk running to the bathroom to get cry her eyes out again and get herself together.
~~
The bathroom was empty when she got there. She dropped her stuff and stared at her reflection at the mirror. Seeing how helpless she looked, she came to a conclusion that had already dawned on her before.
Maybe they would never probably end up together how she always imagined.
She recalled how the first day she saw him in middle school was for her. She had just been there, doodling on her book and waiting for the bell to go off for the next class when the teacher clapped to get their attention to her. She looked up to see him standing there, taller than most boys in their grade, looking so handsome an innocent that she couldn't help but develop a crush for him right away. He was asked to introduce himself and he had said his name was Marco Ryan with a bright smile on his face. And ever since then, the name had stuck with her.
She recalled too how the teacher had put him to sit behind her and how he had flashed a smile at her before walking past to go to his seat which had made her little child heart to miss a beat.
"I'm Marco, what about you?" He had asked after the teacher left.
"Julie Norman." She had replied shyly staring at anytime but his eyes.
And ever since then, they had become friends.
Or that's what he saw her as.
But to her, he was her first crush, the first person that ever made her heart beat faster than supposed and of course her first love.
She took a deep breath as the tears rolled down. She was going to be a strong person because that's what she had always been, and she'd continue to be.
She parked her hair with a rubber band and switched on the tap. Cupping the water with her hands, she splashed the water on her face, in an attempt to wash out any sign that would show she had been crying.
She looked back to the mirror, her eyes still looked puffy but manageable. She took in a heavy breath and wore a convincing smile on her face.
Things were eventually going to get better.
Or so she hoped.
