Chapter 14 "When the Past Knocks"

1966 Words
The realm was quiet again, too quiet. The air shimmered faintly, as if holding its breath after the storm of choices that had just been made. Ethan stood a few steps behind Elara, his gaze fixed not on the horizon, but on her. She was staring into the mist, unaware that he'd returned from his talk with Kenneth. The light of the Tower flickered across her face, catching the quiet exhaustion in her eyes. "Elara…" Ethan's voice was soft, careful, the kind of tone used when the next words might break something fragile. She turned slightly, her guard already half up. "What did he say?" Ethan hesitated. The truth felt heavy on his tongue. "He found Rowan." Elara froze. Just hearing the name was enough to make the air between them thicken. Her fingers tightened around the hilt of her blade, not in threat, but in defense. Of her heart. "Rowan," she repeated quietly, like a curse she didn't want to believe still held power. "What does he want?" Ethan exhaled slowly. "He said he wants to fix things. He… he regrets everything. He wants to talk to you, Elara. Just once. To explain." Elara laughed, but there was no humor in it. Only disbelief. "Explain? What could he possibly explain, Ethan? How he lied? How he made me feel like I was never enough?" Her voice trembled, the calm she'd built slowly cracking open. "Do you know how many times I tried to hold on? How many times I told myself that maybe it was just me, that I was asking for too much?" Ethan didn't interrupt. He knew what it felt like to break quietly. Elara went on, her eyes glistening in the flickering light. "I forgave him when he forgot me. I stayed when he stopped trying. I fought for him until there was nothing left to fight for. And he still, "Her voice broke. "He still chose someone else." Silence. The kind that carried pain like a secret. Ethan took a careful step closer. "I know it hurts. And maybe he doesn't deserve to be heard. But… sometimes hearing the truth is the only way to stop it from owning you." Elara looked at him sharply. "You think I should forgive him?" "No," Ethan said quickly. "I think you should free yourself from him. "He hesitated, his gaze softening. "And maybe… listening is the only way to finally let him go." Elara's breath hitched. For a long moment, she didn't speak. The Tower's wind whispered between them, like the world was eavesdropping. Finally, she looked down, voice quieter now. "You really think I should talk to him?" Ethan nodded once. "Not for him, for you." Her lips pressed into a thin line. "I don't know if I can face him without… remembering everything." "Then I'll be there," Ethan said gently. "You won't face him alone." Elara closed her eyes, breathing out a shuddering sigh. Her resolve was still tangled in pain, but somewhere inside, his words found a small crack of light. When she opened her eyes again, she nodded faintly. "Fine. Just once." Ethan smiled, not in triumph, but in quiet relief. "That's all I ask." Far away, beyond the shimmering haze, the Tower stirred, the Realm already sensing what was coming. The past was returning. And it would demand to be heard. The clearing shimmered with the soft pulse of the realm's light, restless, alive, as if sensing that something long buried was about to be unearthed. Ethan stood beside Elara, both of them waiting. Neither spoke, but the silence between them was thick with the ghosts of what-ifs. Then, from the mist, two figures emerged, Kenneth first, his eyes heavy with hesitation… and behind him, Rowan. The moment Rowan stepped into the light, Elara's breath caught. His face, familiar and foreign all at once, looked older, burdened by regret. For a second, she thought her mind was playing tricks on her. "Elara…" Rowan's voice cracked like glass. The sound of her name left him trembling. "It's really you." Elara didn't answer. She turned her gaze away, arms crossed tightly, as if to shield herself from the storm he carried. Rowan took a cautious step forward. "You look… different. Stronger. I've thought about this moment for so long, what I'd say if I ever saw you again." Still, silence. He tried again, desperation creeping in. "Elara, please. I know I don't deserve your forgiveness, but I need you to understand, I made mistakes. I was lost. I thought I was protecting you when I was only pushing you away." Elara's jaw tightened. She stared at the ground, refusing to give him the validation of her eyes. Rowan swallowed hard, words tumbling out in fragments. "You were everything to me. I was afraid, afraid of losing control, afraid of being weak, and in that fear, I ruined the only thing that ever made sense." Nothing. Not a word from her. The silence hurt worse than shouting ever could. Rowan's voice grew rougher, frustration bleeding through. "Say something, Elara! Please," Ethan flinched at the desperation in his tone but didn't move. He knew this wasn't his place. When Elara still didn't answer, Rowan's expression darkened. The remorse twisted into something sharper, desperate. "So that's it? You're just going to stand there? You won't even look at me?" He turned abruptly toward Ethan. "And you," he spat, his voice trembling with anger, "you think you can just walk in and take her? You think you know her better than I do?" Ethan took a step back, startled by the sudden fury. "Rowan,." Before he could finish, Rowan grabbed Ethan by the collar, dragging him close, his eyes burning. "Stay away from her! Do you hear me? She's mine!" Elara's voice cut through the air, sharp as lightning. "Let him go, Rowan." Rowan froze, her voice pulling him back to himself, but only barely. He looked at her, wild-eyed. "You're defending him?" Elara took a step forward, her expression fierce, tears threatening to spill. "I'm defending the one who stood by me when my world fell apart. The one who saw me as more than just someone to possess." Rowan's grip faltered. "Elara,." "No!" she shouted. "You had your chance, Rowan. You had everything. And you threw it away. "Her voice trembled, but her words were steel. "Don't you dare tell me who I should love. Not anymore." The realm seemed to echo her cry, light rippling, branches shivering as if the world itself reacted to her defiance. Ethan, silent through it all, slowly pried Rowan's hand from his collar. He looked between them, the woman he loved, the man she once loved, and something inside him broke quietly. Without a word, he stepped back. Elara turned, panic flickering across her face. "Ethan,. wait, please," But he didn't stop. Ethan walked away, each step heavier than the last, his silhouette fading into the white mist. He didn't look back. Couldn't. Because some heartbreaks are too quiet for words, they're written in the sound of footsteps leaving. Ethan stood on the cliffside, the realm's twilight washing over him in hues of violet and gold. The air was still, too still, as though even the world held its breath. He looked back once, to where the faint sound of Elara's voice still echoed faintly in his mind. Her cries. Her anger. Her heartbreak. He could still see Rowan's face, desperate, pleading, broken, and Elara's, filled with a love she was too afraid to name. Ethan clenched his fists. He'd come this far to be with her, through pain and uncertainty, but now… maybe love meant knowing when to step away. "I can't be the reason she's torn anymore," he whispered to himself. "Maybe this is where my story with her ends." The realm wind carried his words away. He looked up at the endless sky, soft, glowing, and cruelly serene, then turned toward the horizon. Somewhere out there, the portal home waited. Somewhere beyond this illusion, the real world still spun. And Ethan Cole… he was ready to find it. He took one last deep breath and stepped into the mist, alone. Switch to Elara "Elara!" Kenneth called out, but she didn't stop. Her boots pounded against the glowing soil, tears streaking her face as she ran through the fog. "Ethan!" she cried again, her voice cracking, echoing into nothing. But only silence answered her. She stumbled into the clearing where he'd been moments ago, the prints of his steps fading, dissolving like they'd never been there at all. Her chest heaved, and she fell to her knees. The realm's soft glow reflected in her tears, shimmering like stars on her skin. "Ethan…" she whispered. "You promised we'd face everything together." Her voice broke. The realm didn't respond. The sky pulsed faintly, as if mourning with her, while the wind carried the last whisper of his name into the distance. But Elara didn't stop. Even as her strength faltered, she kept walking, searching, calling for him. She didn't care if the realm tore itself apart. She just needed to find him. Because love, even broken, still demanded to be chased. Switch to Rowan and Kenneth Far from the ruins of that confrontation, Rowan walked beside Kenneth, silent and heavy with regret. Kenneth finally spoke, his tone low but firm. "You shouldn't have done that." Rowan didn't reply. His hands were shaking, still remembering the feel of Ethan's collar, the fear in Elara's eyes. Kenneth sighed, slowing his pace. "Ethan wasn't your enemy, Rowan. He was trying to help you, help both of you. If you really want to fix what you broke, anger won't do it." Rowan stopped walking, staring at the horizon where light bled into shadow. "I know," he murmured. "I lost control… again. I saw her, and all that guilt just,." He clenched his jaw. "It swallowed me." Kenneth looked at him, thoughtful but distant. "Then maybe it's time to face the truth. Some things aren't meant to be fixed the way we want them to be." Rowan's eyes flickered with pain. "But I have to try." Kenneth gave a faint nod. "Then do it the right way. Not with anger. Not with jealousy. If you want to make it right, start by forgiving yourself." Rowan looked at Kenneth, surprised, then humbled. Before either could say more, a pulse of light erupted ahead. The air shimmered, parting like a curtain, and there, suspended in midair, was a familiar glow. A portal. Rowan stared. "It's… an exit." Kenneth hesitated. "Looks like it." They exchanged a look, wordless, tense, then stepped through together. Switch to Ethan Days passed. Or maybe it had only been hours. The realm didn't keep time the way the real world did. Ethan wandered through glowing forests, across silver lakes, through cities built of memory and dream. Each corner seemed to whisper Elara's name, the warmth of her smile, the weight of her touch. But she wasn't there. He searched for the faint hum of a portal, for any sign of return. Nothing. Only the endless horizon and the quiet hum of loneliness. He leaned against a tree that glowed faintly blue and looked at the device in his hand, the RealmLink, its light fading. "I'll find a way," he said softly. "Even if it takes everything." And somewhere far away, in another corner of the realm, Elara was still running, still calling his name. Her heart refused to give up, even as the distance grew wider. Two souls, separated by choice and fate, moving through the same world but never crossing paths. The realm shimmered softly, as if watching them both, and whispered a truth neither of them could hear yet. Sometimes, love doesn't end. It just gets lost between worlds.
